Conflicting reports on 2024 5-star Derik Queen’s announcement date

The last of Indiana’s big three class of 2024 recruiting dominos appears set to fall very soon.

But precisely when is the subject of conflicting reports on Wednesday.

Five-star center Derik Queen is expected to announce Friday between Indiana and Maryland, his Montverde Academy coach Kevin Boyle told Adam Zagoria for Forbes.

But according to a separate report by Joe Tipton of On3, Queen is not planning a Friday announcement.  Tipton deleted a Twitter post in which he said the Zagoria report was inaccurate.

UPDATE:  Later on Wednesday Queen posted on his Twitter page he is not announcing a commitment on Friday.

In any case, Queen has been widely expected to make a college decision before the November early signing period, which at this point is less than two weeks away.

IU and Maryland have traveled this week to Florida to make their final recruiting pitch.  According to 247Sports national analyst Travis Branham, Houston was also going to make the trip to Montverde to see Queen today as well.

Indiana was at Montverde for Queen on Tuesday, and Maryland is there today.  A Baltimore native, Queen just completed an official visit to Maryland over the weekend.  The Terps have long been considered a favorite by the national analysts, but Queen visited Indiana twice and has been prioritized by the staff.  For a long time there has been belief on the IU side that this is a recruitment they can win.

According to the On3 Industry Average, the 6-foot-9 Queen is the No. 15 overall player in the 2024 class.  He’s a 5-star according to three of the main four national recruiting outlets.

The Hoosiers landed a commitment from Queen’s Montverde teammate and close friend Liam McNeeley a couple weeks ago.  He is their lone 2024 commit to this point.

The Indiana staff prioritized McNeeley, Queen and guard Boogie Fland for much of the summer and fall.  They lost out on Fland to Kentucky last week, but will try to close on two of their main three on Friday.
