The news is not good after former IU football star Mikail Kamara was carted off the field at San Francisco 49ers camp this weekend.
Kamara was diagnosed with a torn ACL, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
The 49ers waived Kamara with an injury designation on Sunday, and he will revert to the team’s injured reserve list once he clears waivers.
After signing as an undrafted free agent, Kamara was competing for a role as a pass rusher and special teams contributor for San Francisco.
A product of Ashburn, Virginia, Kamara appeared in 52 career games with 51 starts in six seasons at James Madison and Indiana, all for coach Curt Cignetti.
In 2025 Kamara led the Big Ten and finished tied for No. 7 in FBS in total pressures (60) per Pro Football Focus. He blocked first career punt in the third quarter of the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, which was recovered by Isaiah Jones for a touchdown.
He was first-team All-Big Ten in 2024 with 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. He led the FBS in total pressures (73) per Pro Football Focus.
Kamara’s younger brother Amari is a second-year linebacker at IU.
