New IU football OC Rod Carey is also coaching QBs, not ready to name starter

In addition to figuring out how to get the Hoosiers in the end zone, new IU football offensive coordinator Rod Carey has to determine who will be his starting quarterback.

Or at least he’s not ready to talk about that just a few days into his new role.

Carey was not willing to discuss anything about personnel on Wednesday in his first public appearance since being named Indiana’s OC.  Perhaps nothing will change, but he declined to say who will be behind center when the Hoosiers face Michigan in Ann Arbor a week from Saturday.

In addition to his offensive coordinator duties, Carey is also assuming the role of coaching the quarterbacks.  He’s been involved with that group throughout the season in his former quality control role.

Tayven Jackson was named the IU starter at QB in week three, but he was pulled by coach Tom Allen in favor of backup Brendan Sorsby against Maryland on Saturday when the Hoosiers trailed 37-3.  Allen said the move was made in an effort to provide the team a spark.

Over five games with three full-time starts, Jackson has completed 71-of-115 passes (61.7 percent) for 862 yards.  He has two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Sorsby has appeared in three games and completed 24-of-43 passes (55.8 percent) with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

IU fired former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Walt Bell on Sunday.
