Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is in New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony Saturday night, but he’s already won multiple other player of the year awards.
Mendoza joined IU head coach Curt Cignetti in sweeping the Walter Camp Awards on Wednesday. He was named AP Player of the Year on Thursday. And Friday evening, he added the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award to his haul.
The Maxwell goes to “the most outstanding college football player,” while the O’Brien goes to the best quarterback in the country.
Mendoza is the second IU player to receive the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, joining running back Anthony Thompson (1989) for both. Thompson finished runner up for the Heisman, however, behind Houston quarterback Andre Ware.
The AP award didn’t exist until 1998, so Mendoza is the first Hoosier to win that honor. He’s also the first Indiana quarterback to win the O’Brien Award.
The Heisman Trophy ceremony begins Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
