IU women’s basketball: Three reasons the Hoosiers fell to Michigan, highlights, stats, quotes

Indiana women’s basketball fell to No. 9 Michigan 95-67 on Thursday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington.

Below are three quick reasons why the Hoosiers lost, along with highlights, final stats, and a few quotes.

IU (11-11, 0-10) is back in action on Sunday at home against Northwestern.

    ——————————————————

    1. A turnover nightmare – Although Teri Moren has emphasized ball security in practice, the Hoosiers have not yet displayed serious improvement this season. Indiana had 23 turnovers against the Wolverines tonight, and let up 26 points off of those giveaways. Michigan’s trap press was especially challenging for IU’s guards. Nevaeh Caffey, Lenée Beaumont, and Shay Ciezki combined for 16 turnovers. The Wolverines came into the matchup with the No. 4-ranked defense according to Torvik, but many of Indiana’s turnovers were self-inflicted from errant passes and poor ball-handling.

    2. Wolverines dominate the glass – Michigan didn’t have a significant height advantage over Indiana on paper, but they were the better rebounding team by a significant margin. The Wolverines outrebounded the Hoosiers 37-25 on Thursday, and hauled in 14 offensive rebounds. They capitalized with 16 points, while IU earned three second-chance points. Rebounding was a major reason for the early deficit, as Michigan dominated the glass 19-8 in the first half.

3 . Foul trouble – Indiana didn’t have any players miss a significant amount of time because of fouls on Thursday, but fouling remains a notable problem. Both Ciezki and Maya Makalusky fouled out, and each of IU’s starters finished with at least three fouls. The Hoosiers, as a team, racked up 24 fouls in total. Michigan was able to take advantage on free throws, scoring 18 points from the charity stripe.

    Quotes

Maya Maklusky on playing ranked opponents: “I think in the Big Ten, the majority of teams are going to be ranked now. It’s a great conference to play in, but I think we go into every game knowing that we can steal that from them. I truly believe we have the pieces, we have the girls that can beat these teams. We showed it when we have those good stretches but we have to keep those good stretches.”

Teri Moren on fan support: “We’ve won an awful lot around here, and I hope our fans have enjoyed that but I also hope that they haven’t forgotten that. I haven’t forgotten how to coach, and my staff hasn’t forgotten how to coach. I’m not making excuses, that’s not how I’m built, but we’re dealing with a team that just hasn’t had a lot of reps in big tiem games, and this is a big time conference. We haven’t handled ourselves well, and it’s been a plethora of things, not just one thing.”
