Indiana women’s basketball took care of business on Saturday, defeating Penn State 93-59 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in the regular-season finale.
The Hoosiers (17-13, 6-12 Big Ten) clinched their spot in the Big Ten Tournament with the win. Their seed and matchup in Indianapolis will be determined after conference play wraps up on Sunday.
Indiana dominated Saturday’s contest from the very beginning. Teri Moren’s squad got off to a 23-2 start, and finished the first quarter leading 31-8. Penn State (11-18, 4-14) shot just 17.6 percent from the field in that opening period. By halftime, the Hoosiers grew their lead to a staggering 57-23 advantage.
Four IU players eclipsed 10 points in the first half alone, with star guard Shay Ciezki leading the way at 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting. The senior finished with 29 points on a 12-for-18 line, with five rebounds, three assists and two turnovers, four steals, and a block.
Indiana made Penn State pay for its mistakes in this game. The Hoosiers racked up 33 points off 18 PSU turnovers, while they committed only 13, themselves.
Redshirt sophomore Lenée Beaumont enjoyed one of her better games of the season. The wing shot 5 for 11, with a 7-for-7 clip at the foul line, for 18 points, and she grabbed seven rebounds.
Freshman Nevaeh Caffey scored a career-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, and she added five assists with two turnovers, three rebounds, and a steal. And fellow freshman Maya Makalusky had another solid performance, shooting 5 for 10 from the field and 3 for 8 from 3-point range for 15 points, along with five rebounds.
Additionally, junior Jade Ondineme had her biggest game as a Hoosier. The junior college transfer led the team with a season-high eight rebounds, along with four points off the bench. She played long stretches in the second half with Edessa Noyan in foul trouble.
