Could this be the year IU men’s soccer claims national title No. 9?
There’s a long way to go before we get to the College Cup in December, but this year’s squad appears to be a legitimate contender.
After their best start to a season since 1997, Indiana was tabbed the No. 1 team in the nation in this week’s United Soccer Coaches Poll. It’s the first time IU has been ranked No. 1 since the start of the 2021 season.
As the Hoosiers (5-0-1) get set to begin Big Ten play, they are the only ranked team in the league.
Several teams IU has played are ranked, including a No. 2 Clemson squad that tied Indiana in the season opener. The Hoosiers have defeated No. 20 San Francisco and No. 24 St. Louis. They also beat No. 6 Louisville in the preseason.
Individual honors are following the early season team accomplishments. Indiana earned three Big Ten Player of the Week honors this week, as Holden Brown fielded his second-straight Goalkeeper of the Week award, Breckin Minzey secured Defensive Player of the Week, and Collins Oduro earned Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The No. 1 Hoosiers play Michigan at 8 p.m. Saturday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Wolverines are one of two Big Ten teams receiving votes — along with Maryland — as league play begins.
Indiana men’s soccer has won eight national titles throughout its prestigious program history, with the last coming in 2012.
