Indiana men’s basketball, if only for a day in late July, is golden.
IU, representing the United States, captured the gold medal in the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru. It defeated the U.S. Virgin Islands in a rematch from the group stage to top the podium, winning 99-57 on Monday.
Indiana built a huge lead in the first half, leading 25-8 after the first quarter and 52-23 by halftime. The U.S. Virgin Islands fought back in the third quarter, outscoring IU 20-17 in the period. But ultimately, Darian DeVries’ team had far too much talent and size for opponents to keep pace.
This was the Hoosiers’ closest game of the tournament in Peru. They steamrolled Chile in the semifinals, 107-40, to reach Monday’s gold medal game. They previously beat the U.S. Virgin Islands 120-63 in the group stage, after opening the tournament with a 115-36 victory over Peru.
