Indiana is going to have to fight to keep Pennsylvania-based defensive back Jay Timmons in its 2026 class.

The son of former NFL linebacker Lawrence Timmons is off to a big start this summer.

The 5-foot-11 and 185-pound Timmons was recently bumped up to a 4-star recruit by 247 Sports.  That came after he was one of the top performers at the UA Next Prospects Camp in New Jersey. During the camp, Timmons was clocked with a 4.4 time in the 40.

Next Timmons went to another camp at his father’s alma mater, Florida State.  There he was offered a scholarship.  Timmons’ father was a star at FSU.  He was a NFL first round draft pick coming out of Tallahassee.

Timmons told Pittsburgh Sports Now this week he’s likely to take an official visit to Florida State.  His only official to this point has been his trip to IU in April.

So far what he’s saying about the situation sounds promising.  But it’s a long way to signing day in December.

“It’s going to be hard for any school to top Indiana,” he told PSN.  “Indiana is going to stay above the major schools because Indiana is a major school itself and a college football playoff team.”

Timmons is now one of three 4-star in IU’s emerging 2026 class that ranks inside the national top-35.

For 2026 IU football commit Jay Timmons, overcoming pressure became a necessity
