Indiana has found its preferred replacement for outgoing strength coach Derek Owings.
Curt Cignetti is working on a deal to hire Colorado State head strength coach Tyson Brown, a source confirms to TDH.
Brown had just arrived at Colorado State in December when he followed head coach Jim Mora there from UConn.
He arrived at CSU as senior associate head coach and director of football strength and conditioning after holding the same role under Mora at UConn. Brown’s experience includes leadership roles at Mississippi State and Washington State, as well as time spent working with NFL athletes.
Indiana’s quick move to hire Brown is critical, as this is the time of year when the strength and conditioning team leads the team through winter workouts ahead of spring practice.
Owings left IU this week to take the same role at Tennessee.
Brown spent two seasons with Mora at UConn, where they led a program turnaround. The Huskies won 18 games over the last two years after winning just 19 the seven years prior to that.
Brown came to Storrs from Mississippi State University where he led the Bulldog football strength and conditioning program since the 2020 season. He was responsible for the design and implementation of every facet of the physical development for the football team, including the areas of injury reduction, sports science tracking, the development of speed, power, strength and football specific conditioning.
Brown holds a holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Sioux Falls where he also played, helping lead his team to the 2006 and 2008 NAIA National Championships. He also holds a master’s from California University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to his stint at Mississippi State, he was the lead assistant under Jason Loscalzo at Washington State University, before briefly accepting the head strength and conditioning coach job at Elon University — where Cignetti was the head coach. But when Loscalzo left for the NFL weeks later, Brown returned to Pullman to lead the Cougars’ strength and conditioning program efforts.
Prior to his stint with the Cougars, Brown spent one year as associate director of strength and conditioning at South Florida, where he was the lead assistant strength and conditioning coach for football and director of strength and conditioning for volleyball.
He had two years as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Washington before his time at WSU. In 2008, he was an intern strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater Sioux Falls. A native of Bothell, Washington, Brown worked as a graduate assistant athletic performance coach at Baylor in 2009 and then as a strength coach intern for the NFL’s Houston Texans during the 2010 season.
During his career, he has also coached in 10 bowl games.
