Indiana received good news from the courtroom on Wednesday afternoon.
Dallas County, Texas judge Dale Tillery ruled IU football safety Louis Moore won an injunction against the NCAA to remain eligible the rest of the 2025 season.
A Temporary Restraining Order clearing Moore for the rest of the season was filed in the Dallas County Court portal.
“This Court is of the opinion that Moore is entitled to the issuance of Temporary Injunction and that such an Order is necessary to protect Moore’s rights and interests,” Tillery wrote. “This Order is necessary because of the immediate need to allow Moore to play football for Indiana for the 2025-26 season, in order to prevent irreparable harm to Moore’s career-including development with the Team, the opportunity to play with the Team, and the opportunity to effectuate his NIL deal.”
The Temporary Injunction is in effect until a new trial date set for Jan. 29, which is after the College Football Playoff Championship game.
Indiana’s starting free safety, Moore sued the NCAA after the organization denied his request for a waiver to play the 2025 season.
The parties disagreed on the application of the NCAA’s “Five-Year Rule,” which mandates that a student-athlete must use no more than four seasons of competition in the same sport within a five-year window. Moore’s time as junior college athlete, injury history, and a recent NCAA ruling related to Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia complicated the matter.
Moore first enrolled in college (Navarro Junior College) in 2019 where he spent three years. He then played at IU in 2022-23, Ole Miss in 2024, and he returned to Bloomington this year.
The court order states the NCAA is enjoined from enforcing the five-year rule as it relates to Moore’s time in junior college.
Moore leads Indiana with 23 tackles, and he’s the team’s co-leader with two interceptions.
This is especially good news for IU. Indiana coach Curt Cignetti has said multiple times the Hoosiers lack depth at the safety position. And recent injuries to Bryson Bonds and Byron Baldwin have made matters worse.
No. 11/12 Indiana travels to Iowa on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff (Peacock).
