IU football coach Curt Cignetti met with the media on Monday and shared some insights on the depth chart and an injury to a key player during fall camp.
— On quarterback Josh Hoover, Cignetti says there’s no question he’s seen improvement and more confidence. He reminded how the IU offense struggled in week one a year ago against Old Dominion for context on how the process with new quarterbacks takes time.
— When it comes to the quarterback expected to back up Hoover, Cignetti says Grant Wilson is maintaining an edge over Tyler Cherry for the No. 2 spot. In his seventh college season, Wilson’s experience and performance at fall camp has positioned him to “definitely have the edge” right now according to Cignetti. Wilson was the third string quarterback for IU a year ago, while Cherry missed the entire season with a knee injury.
— Cignetti says defensive ends Kellen Wyatt and Stephen Daley will continue to practice with the team although they are both currently ineligible after a court decision. The head coach says he supports the players as they seek a path to the field this season.
— Wide receiver Tyler Morris is likely to open the season as the team’s punt returner, Cignetti says. A transfer from Michigan ahead of the 2025 season, Morris missed the entire national championship run with a spring 2025 knee injury. He’s likely to be Indiana’s starting receiver in the slot as well. Cignetti says running backs Lee Beebe, Jr., Khobie Martin and Turbo Richard have all gotten looks for the kickoff return role.
— Cornerback A.J. Harris has missed practice recently with what Cignetti characterized as a “tweaked knee.” He’s not expected to be out long, the head coach says. The absence could give the edge to Ryland Gandy to start opposite Jamari Sharpe, but that may be something we probably won’t know for sure until the opener vs. North Texas. Cignetti spoke as though Harris will still have time to win the job at practice before the season.
Indiana kicks off the 2026 season on Sept. 5 against North Texas at Memorial Stadium.
