Coming off a loss, IU football heads to Michigan Stadium — where the Hoosiers have not won in nearly 60 years.
Indiana will need to leave Ann Arbor victorious for the first time since 1967 to avoid the first two-game losing streak of the Curt Cignetti era.
No. 6 Indiana (6-1) will take on Michigan (4-2) Saturday afternoon at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor (Noon ET, FOX).
Indiana is 11-62 all-time against the Wolverines, but the Hoosiers won the last meeting 20-15 in 2024. IU has not defeated Michigan two games in a row since 1958-59. Despite the poor all-time performance head-to-head, Indiana can move to .500 against Michigan over the last six meeting with a win Saturday.
Michigan is led by first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. The 66-year old is 181-90 over his 23-year coaching career. Whittingham’s venture to Michigan this year was his first stop out of the West. The BYU graduate spent all of his prior time as a assistant and head coach in Utah and Idaho, including 22 years as the head coach of Utah.
The Wolverines defeated Penn State 21-18 at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. This weekend’s game will be their seventh at home in eight contests. The Wolverines have wins over Western Michigan, Oklahoma, UTEP and Penn State. Their losses came at Minnesota and vs. Iowa.
First-year offensive coordinator Jason Beck came from Utah with Whittingham. The offense has struggled thus far. The Wolverines are averaging just 22.7 points per game, good for 105th in the nation.
Jay Hill is the Michigan defensive coordinator. He reunited with Whittingham in 2026 after leading the BYU defense for the last three years. He was an assistant under Whittingham for 13 years. The Wolverines are only allowing 16.2 points per game, good for 21st nationally.
PFF grades Michigan as having the No. 52 offense and No. 7 defense in the country.
Quarterback play has been a central theme in Michigan’s offensive struggles, and Whittingham made a change during the Penn State game on Saturday.
Second-year Bryce Underwood (58.1 completion percentage, 5 TDs, 6 INTs) was benched in favor of first-year Tommy Carr, who is the grandson of former UM head coach Lloyd Carr, and brother of Notre Dame QB CJ Carr.
The 6-foot-4 Carr has played in two games and completed 7 of 9 throws for 70 yards and a score. The nimble runner has carried six times for 54 yards.
Carr was 5 of 7 for 47 yards against Penn State after entering the game in the second half. Michigan relied on the running game (225 yards, three scores) to power past the Nittany Lions. The Wolverines still rank just 84th in rushing offense at 148 yards per game.
So what’s the outlook for this Saturday in Ann Arbor? The oddsmakers and computers like Indiana by around a touchdown.
As of Monday morning, the gambling forecast is calling the Hoosiers around a 7-point favorite.
ESPN’s FPI model gives IU an 82.2% chance to win. The Hoosiers are No. 5 in FPI while the Wolverines are No. 32. ESPN’s SP+ model projects a 26-18 Indiana win, and gives them a 69% probability to pull it out.
The early weather forecast for Saturday is calling for a sunny day with light wind, a high temperature of 67 and a low of 40. Obviously you’ll want to check back on that later in the week.
We will of course have much more on this game in the days to come.
