INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana continued exhibition action Sunday against North Carolina at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Here are some quick notes, observations and stats from IU’s 76-58 win over the Tar Heels:
— Same starting five: The Hoosiers went with the same starters as the Butler game — Aiden Sherrell, Samet Yigitoglu, Jaeden Mustaf, Darren Harris and Markus Burton.
— Nine-deep rotation: In addition to the starters, Bryce Lindsay, Sam Alexis, Trevor Manhertz and Trent Sisley.
— Lindsay shines: Burton got in early foul trouble for the second straight game, which opened up a big role for Villanova transfer Bryce Lindsay. He capitalized with a team high 26 points — and he only needed 14 shots to get there.
— Yigitoglu struggles to finish against length. Samet Yigitoglu was often matched up with UNC’s 7-foot-1 center Sayon Keita (a former IU recruiting target). Yigitoglu missed several shots at close range and was 0-3 for the game. Aiden Sherrell was also just 3-of-8, and Jaeden Mustaf missed on multiple drives in the paint and was also 3-of-8.
— Rebounding dominance: North Carolina went 7-1, 6-10 and 6-9 along its starting frontcourt. But IU completely dominated on the glass. The Hoosiers owned a 53-31 overall advantage on the glass, and pulled down 20 offensive rebounds. This follows a dominant rebounding effort against Butler last Sunday. Yigitoglu had 11 rebounds including five on the offensive end, while Sherrell had 10. Sam Alexis added four offensive rebounds.
— Defense forces UNC inefficiency: IU was generally effective on the ball and staying close to shooters. They were especially effective challenging shots in the paint. UNC scored just .80 points per possession and made just 36.6% of its shots from two. North Carolina had 15 turnovers.
— Turnovers: IU had 15 turnovers of their own. And the Hoosiers shot just 36.2% from the field. But these numbers show why offensive rebounding can be so valuable. Indiana had 17 second chance points.
