Indiana suffered a big loss late in Saturday’s 38-13 win over Michigan State.
Defensive end/outside linebacker Kellan Wyatt is out long-term with a knee injury.
“Right now looks like a long term injury, not sure if we’ll see him the rest of the season or not,” IU coach Curt Cignetti said at his regular Monday press conference.
Wyatt was injured in the fourth quarter when rushing the quarterback. He appeared to collapse and laid on the ground until the training staff arrived and ultimately helped him up. Wyatt did walk off under his own power, albeit with a significant limp.
After transferring in from Maryland during the offseason, Wyatt has been one of Indiana’s most impactful players on the defensive side of the ball. He has 27 tackles this year, including 8.5 for a loss and 2.5 sacks.
Senior edge Stephen Daley has been rotating with Wyatt and will likely see his snaps increase significantly going forward. Daley has been very productive this season as well, with 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
“He’s a guy I really wish we had a couple years, because he’s a tremendous athlete,” Cignetti said Monday of Daley. “Once he learned the defense, he’s really making fast progress.”
Wyatt has played 243 snaps this year to 210 for Daley. At PFF, Daley is the higher-graded defender of the two. While both of their snaps have been primarily on the outside, Daley weighs 16 pounds more than Wyatt and has been utilized a bit more over tackle and in the B gap.
Daley’s three-highest snap totals have come in the last three games, so he should be ready.
Sophomore Daniel Ndukwe saw late game action with the defense Saturday and will likely be elevated in the rotation to spell Daley at times. His snaps vs. MSU Saturday were his first all season on defense.
