Indiana has addressed a position of need in the transfer portal.

Old Dominion safety Shawn Asbury has announced he will play at IU this season.

The 5-9, 192-pound junior earned All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention this season after collecting 93 tackles, which ranked fourth on the team, six tackles for loss, for pass break-ups, and an interception.  He started all 12 games in 2023.

Curt Cignetti and staff competed against Asbury with James Madison in the Sun Belt conference.

In 2022, Asbury appeared in 11 games for ODU, making three starts at safety.  He recorded 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, one interception and a fumble recovery.

He played two seasons for the Monarchs after transferring from Boston College.

Asbury played in seven games for Boston College in 2021, recording five tackles and two pass breakups.

A native of Stafford, Virginia, Asbury was the No. 38 ranked recruit in Virginia and the second-best cornerback in Virginia according to ESPN.

Asbury was a two-time all-state, region and district selection and helped North Stafford to back-to-back regional championships.

Indiana has significant openings at safety after losing Noah Pierre, Louis Moore, Phillip Dunnam and Jordan Grier in the transfer portal.

The Hoosiers have safeties Josh Sanguinetti, Bryson Bonds, Tyrik McDaniel, and Amare Ferrell set to return, along with freshman Jah Jah Boyd.

Later on Thursday, IU also added Asbury’s ODU teammate Terry Jones.
