FINAL: Northwestern 72 – Indiana 68
SECOND HALF
Alexis makes the first, misses the second. West to the free-throw line. 68-66 Northwestern with 14 seconds left.
IU gets a bucket from Tayton Conerway, then Martinelli gives it away. Alexis is fouled on the other end on a putback attempt. Looks to be a little shaken up, too.
Indiana is letting it slip away. 67-63 Northwestern with 48 seconds left.
Hoosiers up 61-60 with 3:37 left to play.
- Indiana hasn’t made a field goal in the last 6:27 of play. Since around the four-minute timeout in the first half, IU hasn’t looked as fluid and open as they did early in the first half. The Hoosiers are shooting 30 percent in the second half.
- This is do-or-die time for Darian DeVries and Indiana. This could be an unrecoverable loss if they drop this one at home, in terms of NCAA Tournament hopes. Big credit to Chris Collins and Northwestern though, they’ve played hard.
Northwestern is within one. 59-58 with 5:10 to play.
- Indiana is on ANOTHER near three-minute scoring drought. They’ve only scored 17 in the half altogether. The looks are there too, but shots aren’t falling.
Hoosiers lead 56-52 with 7:58 in the game.
- Lamar Wilkerson has been virtually silent since a near-perfect first half. He’s still at 14 points and is 5 of 11 from the field. Northwestern has certainly dialed the off-ball pressure on him in the second half.
- Tucker DeVries will go to the free-throw line with a chance to break another two-minute Indiana scoring drought. The Hoosiers are lucky that Northwestern hasn’t taken advantage of those spurts.
Indiana up 52-48 with 11:10 left to go.
- Indiana is slowly letting the Wildcats back into this one. The Hoosiers are on a near three-minute scoring drought with three turnovers in the second half. Offense has gotten some good looks, but shots haven’t fallen as they did in the first half.
- Tayton Conerway has 10 points on a perfect 4 of 4 shooting night so far. I thought he was one of the few players who looked good at Purdue. He’s starting to return to his early Big Ten form.
Indiana leads 47-41 with 15:59 to play.
- Good start out of the half for Northwestern and a bad one for Indiana. Martinelli is up to 15 points with eight of them already in this half. Indiana is 2 of 5 from the field themselves.
- Although the crowd did start to fill in a bit more before tip, there’s a very lukewarm vibe in Assembly Hall tonight. Fans can’t really decide if they want to get into it or not.
HALFTIME: Indiana 42 – Northwestern 33
FIRST HALF
Indiana up 40-29 with 2:50 left.
- Nick Dorn is up to eight points so far. He needed a game like this where he could find his shot back, and it looks like he’s settled in tonight. IU is 7 for their last 8 from the field.
- Both teams are having good nights from the floor, but IU has the clear advantage. They’ve shot 74 percent from the field and are 8 of 12 from beyond the arc.
IU leads 28-19 with 7:40 left in the half.
- Lamar Wilkerson has up to 14 points and has yet to miss a shot from the field. However, it looked like he may have messed up an offensive set, and Darian DeVries got fired up and subbed him out. Not sure if there’s someone on Northwestern’s roster that can guard him.
- Nick Martinelli has been held to five points so far. The Big Ten leading scorer is looking for shots in the post, but Indiana’s matching up their bigs against him has limited opportunities.
Hoosiers lead 18-13 with 11:52 left in the half.
- I did not see Lamar Wilkerson miss in warmups, and he’s yet to miss here so far. He has 12 of Indiana’s points, all from beyond the arc. We could be in for another unconscious night from Lamar.
- IU has just one made field goal outside of Wilkerson, but they are 5 for 8 to start the game. Some of the offensive mistakes have ceased, but Northwestern has still played decent defense.
Indiana leads 8-7 with 15:16 left to play.
- The Hoosiers have matched up Sam Alexis and Reed Bailey as the primary defenders on Nick Martinelli. Martinelli has some length, but IU is trying to combat that as best they can. Martinelli has two points so far.
- IU has looked a bit out of sorts on offense with some communication issues. Both of their first possessions ended with near shot-clock violations.
PREGAME NOTES
- No surprises on today’s injury report. Josh Harris and Jason Drake are both out, and Northwestern’s report is clean.
- Today is my (Owen’s) last game with live updates for TDH for the time being. TDH will have updates moving forward, but I start a job in Louisville next week and will be designated as doubtful for the rest of the season. Jokes aside, it’s been a pleasure talking with you all. Now let’s watch some hoops.
- No change to the starting lineup for IU: Enright, Wilkerson, Dorn, DeVries, Alexis
