IU basketball recruiting Q&A: Latrell Allmond recaps Indiana visit, next steps

Class of 2026 forward Latrell Allmond is a priority target for Indiana.

The 6-foot-8 national top-40 4-star took an official visit to Bloomington last month and now the IU staff is working hard to earn his commitment.

The Daily Hoosier caught up with Allmond at the Adidas 3SSB Circuit stop in Rock Hill, S.C. after one of his games with Team Loaded.

Here’s what Allmond had to say about his visit to Indiana, his thoughts on the coaching staff, the next steps in his recruitment, and more:

    —————————–

What were some things that made you feel really wanted there at Indiana?

Allmond:  The relationship I have built with coach D-Rock (Darian DeVries).  He sat down with me and my family and broke down his plan for me if I were to commit to Indiana.  Over time with me being there the whole time for the visit, he was a real welcoming guy to me and my family.  And of course (IU assistant coach) Kenny Johnson, he’s been recruiting me for the past 8-9 months now, when he was at Georgetown and now he’s back at Indiana.

How has Indiana shown that you are a priority to them?

Allmond:  Just everyday communication.  They’ve been to my games.  Coach D-Rock and Kenny Johnson came down to Richmond, Va. (where Allmond is from) and watched me play.  They didn’t have to do that.  They could have sent somebody else but they came down personally.  That shows how much they prioritize me when the head coach comes down to see you.

How much does it mean to you when the head coach calls and shows up?

Allmond:  It honestly means a lot.  It shows that he has faith in you.  He sees something in you.  He sees a plan and something he can work with.

What do you like about their plan for you?

Allmond:  Just more of me being a five-out kind of guy.  Being able to run inside that pistol offense, getting out in transition, playing quick, catch-and-shoot.  Just more not being so much back-to-the-basket, but being at my natural position at the four spot.

You’ve only taken the one visit to Indiana.  Why was it important to go there first?

Allmond:  They just reached out first.  It wasn’t favoritism or anything like that.  They just reached out with a date and time and we made it happen.

What makes Kenny Johnson a guy that you vibe with?  What do you like about him?

Allmond:  Just how me and him are able to connect.  He comes from where I come from.  That’s where our relationship started.  He understands me as a player, he sees the vision, and he’s just a great guy to be around and talk to, and he’s a family man.

Is there any part of you that’s thinking about shutting down your recruitment relatively soon, and what is your timeline?

Allmond:  I’m planning on committing on my birthday, October 13.  I’m planning on narrowing things down, probably after AAU, see where things are, how things are going, communicate with my family, and go from there.

Do you know (IU 2026 commit) Prince-Alexander Moody?  I know he’s from your area.  Is he pushing you to commit to Indiana?

    Allmond:  No comment (smiling).

How do you guys know each other?

Allmond:  Just through basketball, playing against each other on grassroots teams.  As you play against a guy, competing, you see each other grow up, so that’s where that started.

If you were to commit to Indiana, what do you think would be your position, your playing style?

Allmond:  One, I would say I would be a positionless player.  You can throw me anywhere.  If you throw a big on me, I can showcase my guard skills.  If you put a small forward or guard on me I’m taking them to the post.  You can put me anywhere and I can excel.

Did you watch film with the IU staff?  What do they show you?

Allmond:  It was more of Coach D-Rock’s team last year at West Virginia.  He broke it down to me and my family so everybody got the full overview of everything.

What stood out to you the most about the school at Indiana?

Allmond:  I’d say what stood out to me the most was the black history part of the school.  I didn’t know they had that.  They have a black history building there and me and my family loved it.

You said you’re planning to take more visits, do you know what schools you want to visit?

    Allmond:  No comment.
