IU basketball: Indiana 64 Purdue 93 — Three keys, highlights, final stats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Indiana lost to Purdue Friday evening at Mackey Arena by a final score of 93-64.

The three keys to the game and final stats are below.  Highlights will be added shortly.

Purdue led 46-29 at halftime.  IU was led in the game by Lamar Wilkerson with 20 points.

Indiana (17-10, 8-8) returns to action on Tuesday when the Hoosiers host Northwestern.

    THREE KEYS TO THE GAME

    1. Slow offensive start.  Over the first 12 minutes plus of the game, Indiana was just 5 of 14 from the field with four turnovers.  The was enough time to fall into a 26-14 deficit in a tough environment where comebacks are unlikely.  The Hoosier offense was stagnant, often going late into the shot clock before they took a desperation shot.  It took Indiana too long to figure out the path to points was going to be dribble penetration, along with dives, slips and back cuts to the rim.

    2. Defense gets scorched.  Purdue got whatever it wanted on the offensive end of the floor.  For the game the Boilermakers made 64.7%, and things got worse in the second half when they made 66.7%.  IU tried to double team Trey Kaufman-Renn early, and he found open shooters for three.  They played him straight up, and he scored 20 points.  As a team Purdue had 24 assists against just seven turnovers.  The Boilers made 10 of 18 from three, and they scored 34 in the paint.  It was a complete onslaught.

    3. Where’s Lamar? Where are the threes?  Indiana guard Lamar Wilkerson came into the game scoring a Big Ten high 24.2 points per league game.  He didn’t make a shot from the field until less than 15 minutes remained on the game clock, pulling the Hoosiers to within 60-37.  The game was obviously out of hand by that point.  He found open looks later and ended up with 20.  A major reason why IU’s offense struggled including Wilkerson was a lack of good looks from beyond the arc.  IU took just eight first half threes and 20 for the game.  They averaged 29.4 attempts from long range coming in.
