    Kansas’ Bill Self

Bill Self is celebrating his 20th season as the head coach of the Kansas men’s basketball team. Since taking over in 2003, Self has amassed a 568-133 record with 17 conference championships. Along with the success in conference play, Self has led the Jayhawks to an NCAA Tournament appearance in each of his 20 seasons, with the one exception being the cancelled postseason due to COVID-19 in 2020. As head coach, Self has two national championship victories with Kansas and 14 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen across his entire career. As a result, Self has been named AP Coach of the Year twice (2009, 2016) and has won six Coach of the Year awards in the Big 12.

Self’s coaching career started in Kansas back in 1985, where he served as an assistant under Larry Brown. The following season he served as an assistant at his alma mater in Oklahoma State and would remain there until taking a head coaching job at Oral Roberts in 1993.

At Oral Roberts, Self rebuilt the program from a 6-21 overall start in his first season to a 21-7 finish in his last. He would be hired at Tulsa in 1997, where he would lead the Golden Hurricane to two regular-season conference titles in his three seasons.

Self also spent three seasons with Illinois prior to arriving at Kansas and served as their head coach from 2000-03. In those three seasons, Self lead the Illini to three regular-season conference championships and one conference tournament trophy.

    TIPOFF
    • Kansas brings a five-game winning streak into Saturday’s contest after its 73-64 win against Missouri on Dec. 9 in the HyVee Hoops Border Showdown. Indiana is looking to bounce back from a 104-76 loss to Auburn on Dec. 9 in Atlanta. The Hoosiers are 2-0 in Big Ten play and 5-0 at home this season.
    • This will be the 16th meeting between Kansas and Indiana with the Hoosiers holding an 8-7 series advantage. Kansas has won two of the last three meetings, including an 84-62 victory on Dec. 17, 2022, in Allen Fieldhouse.
    • Kansas is No. 15 in the men’s basketball NET rankings through games of Dec. 12. Kansas’ three Quadrant 1 wins are tied for the second most with Houston and Clemson. Purdue has the most Q1 wins with four.
    • Kansas leads the nation in assists per game at 22.1 and in field goal percentage at 52.7%. Kansas is the only Power 5 school and just one of two teams (McNeese) to rank in the top 10 nationally in both FG% (second) and FG% defense, ninth at 36.1%.
    • Senior Hunter Dickinson leads the nation in rebounds per game at 12.6. With 19.4 ppg, he is the only player in the Big 12 to average a double double.
    • Graduate-senior Kevin McCullar Jr. leads the nation in triple-doubles with two. He is just the seventh player in NCAA history to record consecutive triple doubles and the first since Tony Lee of Robert Morris (2007-08).
    • Redshirt-senior Dajuan Harris Jr. leads the Big 12 in assists per game at 7.0, which is sixth nationally.
    • Junior KJ Adams Jr. is second in the Big 12 in field goal percentage at 67.9%, which is ninth nationally.
    • KU has been ranked in the Associated Press top 10 in each of the last 44 polls dating back to the 2021-22 preseason poll.

    ELITE COMPANY
Senior Hunter Dickinson leads the nation in rebounds per game at 12.6 rpg. Should he keep it up, it would be the fourth time in the Bill Self era and just the fifth time a Jayhawk has led the nation in a stat for a season.

Dickinson has two games with at least 20 rebounds in 2023-24. He is only the second KU player in the Bill Self era to have two 20-plus rebound games for his career with Cole Aldrich having two during the 2008-09 season. Dickinson is just the 10th player in KU history to have two or more 20-rebound games.

    MCCULLAR EARNS WEEKLY HONORS

Kevin McCullar Jr. was named the Big 12 Player of the Week Nov. 27 after averaging 20.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games at the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational, including two contests against top-10 opponents. In the 83-56 win versus Chaminade (11/20), McCullar posted a 22-point, 11-rebound, 10-assist triple-double which also included two blocked shots and three steals. It was McCullar’s second-consecutive triple-double, with his last coming against Kentucky on Nov. 14 (12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). McCullar is just the seventh player in NCAA history, first in the Big 12, to record back-to-back triple doubles and the first since 2008 (Tony Lee of Robert Morris).

    Kansas’s KenPom notable numbers:

    (out of 362 teams)

    Tempo – No. 105 (Offense No. 47 / Defense No. 319)

    Offensive Efficiency – No. 29

    • Kansas is very efficient on the offensive end from all parts of the floor. They shoot well behind the arc at 40.3 percent (No. 12) and are also very potent from two at 56.9 percent (No. 22). Both numbers give the Jayhawks a 58 percent effective field goal percentage (No. 11).
    • The Jayhawks don’t take a lot of threes — just 30.4 percent of field goal attempts (No. 320).
    • Kansas is the best team in the nation when it comes to converting buckets off of assists. 73 percent of their field goals made on the season have come as a result of an assist (No. 1 in the country).
    • An area of struggle that has shown for Kansas has been offensive rebounding. Their 26.5 offensive rebounding percent ranks in the bottom-half of all teams (No. 266).

    Defensive Efficiency – No. 6

    • The Jayhawks have done an exceptional job in limiting open opportunities for opponents on the defensive side. Kansas has held opposing teams to just 42 percent from two (No. 10 in the country) and 31.3 percent from beyond the arc (No. 98). Both numbers give opponents an effective field goal percentage of 44.1 percent (No. 18).
    • Largely off the back of Hunter Dickinson, the interior defense for the Jayhawks has caused opposing teams a lot of problems. Kansas is blocking shots at a 13.9 percent rate (No. 34 in the country) and are limiting offensive rebounding chances for opponents at 25.9 percent (No. 64).
    • The Jayhawks aren’t the best team at forcing a large number of turnovers, also this may be a function of choosing to play fundamental rather than aggressive. Their 16 percent turnover rate (No. 277) is low, but their allowed free throw rate (FTA/FGA) is strong (22.6 percent, No. 14).
