IU Basketball: Devonte Green “Sore” But Should Benefit From Week Off

Indiana appears to have dodged a bullet in its already thin backcourt.

IU head coach Archie Miller indicated after the Nebraska game on Friday night that senior co-captain guard Devonte Green told him that his Achilles was bothering him.

Miller provided a brief update on Monday night, and Green’s injury does not appear to be anything serious.

“Devonte is sore.  He’s a little sore right now,” Miller said on his radio show on Monday night.

“He’s had lower leg injuries, ankles, hamstrings, he’s got a little sore Achilles right now.  He was sore the other night (against Nebraska).  Hopefully, luckily, we’ll get some time to manage him a little bit as we head into Christmas.”

The New York native was substituted out of the Nebraska game on Friday night at the 13:26 mark of the second half and did not return.  He had a collision at midcourt just moments before his exit while making a pass in transition to Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Green was able to walk without assistance or a significant limp, but he also remained seated during moments when the rest of teammates were up off the bench and celebrating during the remainder of the game on Friday night.

The 6-foot-3 Green has appeared in eight games thus far on the 2019-20 season, starting twice.  He is averaging 12.5 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game in 23.8 minutes per contest.  Green is shooting 45.3 percent from the field overall including 42.5 percent from three-point range.

Expected to be a starter all season, Green missed the first three games of the season with a hamstring injury and has since been eased back into the rotation.  Green started the last two games.  He scored a career high 30 points after coming off the bench on Dec. 3 against Florida State.

Indiana has had to navigate its way through the young season with injuries to both Green and sophomore point guard Rob Phinisee.

While any injury is significant in just a four scholarship guard backcourt, Miller has seemingly grown accustomed to dealing with the adversity.

“If he can’t go, we’ll be ready with the other three guys,” Miller said.

The Hoosiers face Notre Dame on Saturday at noon ET at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
