Indiana Men’s Soccer: The Quest For 9 – NCAA Tournament Primer

It’s that time of year when even the most casual Hoosier soccer fans start to pay attention to IU’s signature athletics program — the men’s soccer team.  Collectively, Indiana University has 24 team NCAA titles.  Eight of these titles belong to the men’s soccer program.  The eight titles are the second most in NCAA history.  St. Louis has 10, but it last won a title in 1973.  Indiana has won all eight since then.  It is the most prestigious men’s soccer program in the country, and this season has done nothing to diminish that standing.

    Meet the 2017 Hoosiers

Led by head coach Todd Yeagley, the Hoosiers are the only undefeated team in the nation with an overall record of 15-0-5 and a 5-0-3 record in the Big Ten.  Indiana bested their opponents by a dominating 42-4 in goals scored.

Indiana played in eight matches against NCAA Tournament teams and posted a record of 3-0-5 with wins over number 12-seeded Notre Dame, Wisconsin and San Francisco.

The team had an NCAA leading 16 shutouts.

The Hoosiers technically finished 2nd during the Big Ten regular season despite not losing a conference match.

Indiana finished runner-up in the Big Ten tournament, falling short in penalty kicks to Wisconsin.

    Meet the Stars

First Team All Big Ten:  Grant Lillard, Mason Toye, Andrew Gutman and Francesco Moore.

Second-Team All Big Ten:  Griffin Dorsey, Timmy Mehl and Trey Muse.

Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year:  Grant Lillard.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year:  Mason Toye.

    The 2017 NCAA Tournament

Indiana will be the number 2 overall seed in the tournament (Wake Forest is the overall number 1).  The Hoosiers will face the winner of Old Dominion and N.C. State in a second-round match on Sunday, November 19 at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington at 1:00 PM.

Indiana must win 3 matches (which would all be played on their home field) in order to advance to the College Cup (i.e. the final 4).  The College Cup is located in suburban Philadelphia this year and it begins on December 8th.

We’ve provided a link to the NCAA’s official College Cup bracket here.

    Other Program Notes

This is the Hoosiers’ 31st-straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and the 42nd overall in the program’s history.  The 31-straight berths is the longest active streak in the country.

Indiana has appeared in 18 College Cups which leads all Division I teams.
