Indiana Advances to WNIT Final Four

The dynamic duo reigns supreme once again.

Two of the greatest players in the history of the Indiana University women’s basketball program apparently don’t want their college playing careers to come to an end.  Sparked by a dominant effort from seniors Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill on Sunday afternoon, the Hoosiers knocked out UC Davis 81-66 and advanced to the Women’s NIT Final Four.

Buss, who is IU’s all-time scoring leader and also leads the Hoosiers in a number of other career statistical categories, continued to add to her totals.  On the day she poured in 30 points to go with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.  The IU Hall of Fame bound senior from Mt. Carmel, Illinois added two 3-pointers on the day and is now five short of the Indiana all-time record of 206 career 3-pointers made.

Cahill, who is deserving of the IU Hall of Fame as well, added 24 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals.  The senior from Clyde, Ohio, ranks seventh all-time in scoring, second in all-time in rebounds, third in all-time double-doubles and fifth in blocks.

Indiana continued its impressive run of play that dates back to January.  Since a road loss to Maryland on January 16th, IU has gone 13-2 through Sunday’s WNIT quarterfinals victory.  On the season the Hoosiers improved their record to 21-14.

After a tight game early, the Hoosiers started to pull away midway through the first quarter.  By halftime the Hoosiers were up by 47-27.  UC Davis continued to fight in the 3rd quarter, but the Hoosier lead was too much to overcome.  The Hoosiers controlled the game in part by controlling the glass.  For the game Indiana had a 44-28 rebounding advantage.

The Hoosiers will play in the Final Four of the Women’s NIT for the first time in program history since the field was expanded to 64 teams.  They previously reached the WNIT Final Four in 1991 and 1998.  Indiana will face Texas Christian at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall this Wednesday at 7:00 PM ET.
