Defensive back JoJo Johnson commits to Indiana football

Indiana football’s active spring in the transfer portal is bearing fruit once again.

Juco defensive back JoJo Johnson has committed to IU. He announced his decision on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson is a Merrillville, Indiana native, and he began his college career at Notre Dame. But he tore his ACL early in that 2021 freshman season and transferred to Iowa Western Community College last offseason.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back had a good 2022 season at Iowa Western. He recorded 16 tackles, three interceptions, and two pass breakups across nine games, and the Reivers won the NJCAA National Championship.

Johnson was a 3-star recruit, per 247Sports Composite, coming out of Merrillville High.

At the end of spring camp, IU head coach Tom Allen indicated that the team could look to add a defensive back in the portal. That need likely rose on the list of priorities after Trevell Mullen entered the portal.

Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining.
