Clemson’s Brad Brownell asked about the IU basketball job opening

One head coach frequently mentioned in connection with IU basketball’s upcoming job opening is Clemson’s Brad Brownell.

Coming off a run to the Elite Eight in 2024, Brownell has led the Tigers to a program record 26 regular season wins this year.  Their 18 wins in ACC play is also a new school mark, as was their 90-percent win percentage in league play.

That recent run of success has propelled Brownell into the Indiana conversation.  He’s a natural to be mentioned for the job, as an Indiana native and former high school teammate of Calbert Cheaney in Evansville.

Brownell was asked about the Indiana opening on Wednesday morning ahead of the ACC Tournament.

“I’m not going to talk about potential jobs,” Brownell told reporters.  “I have a great job.  I’m 100 percent focused on this team and what we’ve got ahead of us.  I’m trying to do everything I can to help us continue to win the next game.”

Brownell isn’t accustomed to taking questions about his interest in other jobs.  Just over a year ago he was thought to be on the hot seat at Clemson with just three NCAA Tournaments in his first 13 seasons.  That makes him a somewhat divisive candidate within the IU fan base.

But the Tigers are on a roll in the rapid-changing NIL and transfer portal era, and Brownell recognizes with that success comes outside noise on the other end of the spectrum.

“You’re grateful that you’re doing good things,” Brownell said of the speculation.  “That’s what is going to happen if you’re doing the right things, and you’re winning enough games.  I’ve never been a self-promoter, and that’s partly because that’s how much I really like Clemson.  I’ve sent both daughters here, and been here 15 years.  I think this is a really special place, and I’m proud of what we’ve built.”
