Former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight attended the Indiana vs. Penn State baseball game at Bart Kaufman Field on Saturday afternoon.

Indiana Sports Beat and the Big Ten Network had video of Coach Knight entering the game:

This is believed to be Knight’s first public appearance on the IU campus since he was fired by the school in 2000.  He was accompanied by longtime friend and former Herald Times sportswriter Bob Hammel.

Mike Miller of the Herald Times spoke with IU Athletic Director Fred Glass about the appearance.

The full statement from Glass in the tweet above said the following:

“My understanding is that Coach Knight was in town for other reasons,” Indiana athletic director told The Herald-Times in a text message. “He expressed interest in coming to a baseball game and obviously we were happy to facilitate that. I haven’t talked to him and don’t expect to.”

Knight has a career record of 902-371, including a 662-239 mark at Indiana.  He led the Hoosiers to three national championships.

The Ohio native had indicated over the last 19 years that he had no intention to make a public return to the school.

Knight, who is now 78, has been reported to be in failing health, although he is still making public appearances including earlier this week with Hammel in Greenwood, Ind.
