Indiana softball was unable to sustain momentum from its win over Louisville. The Hoosiers lost to No. 4-seeded Tennessee, 9-1, in five innings on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Volunteers won on the run rule, with an eight-run lead after the fifth inning. Momentum was a big story in this game. IU actually led 1-0 in the first inning on a home run by freshman Taryn Kern, who won Big Ten freshman of the year and player of the year. But Tennessee answered back immediately with two homers in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.…
Indiana softball played its first NCAA Tournament game in 12 years on Friday, taking on Louisville in Knoxville, Tenn. The Hoosiers are off to a good start. IU held on for a dramatic 4-3 win in the regional opener. This is Indiana’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 2006. Indiana led 4-2 heading into the seventh inning, with sophomore starting pitcher Brianna Copeland looking to throw her seventh complete game of the season. But Louisville right fielder Vanessa Miller crushed a leadoff home run to right field to make it a one-run game, and after a groundout, Copeland lost a nine-pitch…
It didn’t take long for teammates and coaches to see something different in Lenée Beaumont as a senior. The 6-foot guard was already a good player before last season, as she committed to Indiana women’s basketball last spring. She went through the offseason and entered the season with the recruiting process behind her, a weight off her shoulders. Beaumont improved her game physically heading into last season, but she made even bigger strides mentally. From the start of the season, she came in much more aggressive and assertive. That was evident as early as Benet Academy’s season-opener at La Lumiere,…
If the goal is to hit your stride, as a team, as you head towards postseason play, then IU baseball is in a good spot. The Hoosiers swept Purdue in dominating fashion over the weekend in three lopsided victories, and moved back into a tie with Maryland for first place in the Big Ten. Indiana racked up 51 runs across the three games, with a 26-11 final on Friday, a 15-3 win on Saturday, and 10-2 on Sunday. IU head coach Jeff Mercer, after Friday’s game, said he was telling the team to keep pushing despite the big lead. “You…
When Mike Woodson took over as head coach of Indiana men’s basketball in 2021, one of the biggest questions around the hire was how he would fare in recruiting. Woodson’s pure coaching acumen was evident through his long NBA career, and his dedication to the program was unquestionably strong. But there are differences between coaching in the professional ranks and the college game, the biggest of which is on the recruiting trail. Many wondered if Woodson was cut out for the constant grind that is recruiting, and if he knew what he was getting himself into in that regard. This…
Indiana football’s active spring in the transfer portal is bearing fruit once again. Juco defensive back JoJo Johnson has committed to IU. He announced his decision on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. https://twitter.com/jojofootball1/status/1656011290744111104 Johnson is a Merrillville, Indiana native, and he began his college career at Notre Dame. But he tore his ACL early in that 2021 freshman season and transferred to Iowa Western Community College last offseason. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back had a good 2022 season at Iowa Western. He recorded 16 tackles, three interceptions, and two pass breakups across nine games, and the Reivers won the NJCAA National…
Indiana baseball got back on track over the weekend. The Hoosiers (34-14, 12-6 Big Ten) picked up a three-game sweep at Northwestern (8-34, 2-7) to climb back into second place in the Big Ten standings. IU took Friday’s game 4-0, Saturday finished 5-2 in 12 innings, and Sunday ended 11-9. Sophomore Luke Sinnard, previously Indiana’s Saturday starter, made his first Friday start of the year in Evanston. And he recorded one of his best outings of the season, throwing 6.2 shutout innings. Sinnard allowed six hits — but only one extra-base hit — and three walks, with seven strikeouts. Redshirt…
For the second straight offseason, Teri Moren has an opening to fill on her staff. Associate head coach Glenn Box has moved on to become head coach at Miami (Ohio), both programs announced Monday. It’s his first head coaching gig in Division I women’s college basketball. Box joined Moren’s staff in 2016 and spent seven seasons with the Hoosiers, with the last three as associate head coach. He worked with Indiana’s guards, so he worked directly with Tyra Buss, Ali Patberg, Grace Berger, Chloe Moore-McNeil, and more. He was also an important recruiter for the Hoosiers — he led IU’s…
Bradley Archer is coming to Indiana to play several roles. The tight end is graduate transferring from Stanford for his final year of eligibility. He’s more of a blocking-oriented tight end, with just four career receptions with the Cardinal. He brings a more battle-tested blocking foundation to the position than, perhaps, IU’s other tight ends have. But perhaps more than that, he’s bringing needed experience and leadership to the Indiana tight end room. Before adding Archer, the Hoosiers had just one other upperclassman tight end — Trey Walker, a walk-on who’s played in just seven games in the last two…
