It was a mark that preceded Bob Knight at Indiana.  It also preceded Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Steve Downing’s 1971 triple double at Indiana had stood the test of time. On February 23, 1971, Downing scored 28 points, and grabbed 17 rebounds and added 10 blocks to record the first ever triple double in IU basketball history.  The Hoosiers went on to beat Michigan on that day 88-79 at the “New Fieldhouse” (now known as the Gladstein Fieldhouse). Nearly 48 years later, Juwan Morgan became the second Hoosier to record the statistical feat with a symmetrical 10 points, 10 rebounds,…

Phinisee left Wednesday’s game in the middle of the first half after taking a knee to the head.  The McCutcheon High School product took a minute to get back to his feet and remained in the game briefly.  Phinisee exited the contest at the 13:09 mark, but did not return and was not on the bench for the second half. Ahhhh patience.  And Indiana football?  Some will scoff at the very idea.  They are broken by the decades of agony. But the rest of us?  My God have we been patient. While some will look to use the latest setback du jour as an opportunity to tell you why it will never happen, the rest of us look for even the slightest glimmer of hope to tell you why it could. That glimmer arrived this week with the confirmation of what had been long expected to be Indiana’s best recruiting class in the era of class rankings.  There will be…

You know the story by now. Get off to a slow start, start taking better care of the ball, make in game adjustments that lead to getting stops on defense, and pull out a victory.  IU has been on this script going all the back to the UC Davis game, save for a forgettable outlier at Duke.  We’ll come back to Duke in a moment. The good news — the in-game transformation came much earlier than it has in recent weeks. After trailing 19-14 at the 14:32 mark in the first half, Indiana went on a 19-0 run over the…
