Call it the Gus Johnson curse. “My intuition’s telling me, there’s gonna be better days for IU!” Johnson exuberantly proclaimed as Indiana completed a stunning come-from-behind win at the Crossroads Classic against Notre Dame in 2017. After an erratic 5-5 start to the Archie Miller era, Johnson felt he saw something special brewing as the Hoosiers overcame a 13-point second half deficit to beat the No. 18 Fighting Irish. Johnson’s optimistic outlook was shared by most IU fans. Fueled by a monster performance by Juwan Morgan, Indiana seemed to figure something out during that second half in Indianapolis, outscoring Notre…

Cathedral High School and Crispus Attucks battled earlier in the week for the Indianapolis city championship. The game featured multiple players who have heard from Indiana on the recruiting front. Cathedral junior guard Tayshawn Comer (15.8 ppg, 5.7 apg) is someone who have spoken to here before. He is No. 12 in white. His teammate Vincent Brady (#2, 15.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg) is a 6-foot-4 senior guard that can go Division One. Jaxon Edwards (10) is a fast rising prospect, and Jake Davis (15), and Xavier Booker (34) are likely college players too. Attucks sophomore forward Jalen Hooks (11.2 ppg,…
It has been a growing trend in college football, and one that IU head coach Tom Allen enthusiastically supports. It is how quarterback Michael Penix nearly stepped in and claimed the starting quarterback job in week one as a true freshman, and briefly took the job over weeks later. Indiana has welcomed four true freshmen as January early enrollees in the class of 2021, along with three transfers. For the freshmen, that means foregoing their final semester of high school and diving right into power-five college football. The option doesn’t work for everyone. The player has to have the right…
A promising Indiana start was quickly erased, and in the fourth quarter it was Ohio State’s turn for a big run. IU opened the game against No. 14 Ohio State on Thursday night with an 11-0 run but fell to the Buckeyes 78-70 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. OSU opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run of its own and never looked back in the final stanza. The Hoosiers (9-4) dropped their second Big Ten game of the season and fell out of a first place tie. Indiana was led by Grace Berger who poured in a career-high tying…

The undefeated 1975-76 Indiana University basketball team was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Wednesday night during a virtual ceremony. Quinn Buckner represented the team during the ceremony. Most of the Indiana coverage begins at around the 45 minute mark of the below video. Indiana’s 1975-76 team finished a perfect 32-0 and remains the most recent Division I team to complete an undefeated season. The dominant Hoosiers – coached by Hall of Famer Bob Knight – won their five NCAA Tournament games by an average of 15.2 points, including an 86-68 rout of Michigan in the…
Tom Allen pulled a name seemingly out of nowhere when he picked Georgia defensive backs coach Charlton Warren to be his next defensive coordinator. When former DC Kane Wommack announced in December he was leaving to become the head coach at South Alabama, Allen emphasized that Wommack’s replacement would be expected to adopt the established IU defensive system rather than come in and make wholesale changes. The list of requirements set out by Allen seemed to significantly narrow the field of candidates. First and foremost would be character in a program defined by its culture, likely meaning someone Allen already…

The notion that home teams in all sports need to “bring their own energy” has quickly become an overused expression in the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. But has the lack of a home crowd been a factor thus far in the Big Ten? IU basketball has certainly struggled at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, losing to middling or worse league foes Northwestern, Purdue and Rutgers on their home court. Just nine games into the league slate, the Hoosiers have already matched their 2019-20 Big Ten home loss total, and the three losses last season included eventual league champions Wisconsin…
