Unbelievable drama unfolded a year ago when IU and Maryland last met. After rallying from a 14-point first half deficit, Indiana let a 7-point lead of their own slip away in the final two minutes at Assembly Hall. Then Jalen Smith taunted the IU crowd, while the world learned of the tragic death of Kobe Bryant. The Hoosiers and Terrapins are unlikely to match any of that when they meet again on Monday night in Bloomington. But the stakes are still very high. It’s a pair of teams with 1-win in league play looking to make a move in the…

It is one of our first postseason stories every year. Our annual position-by-position look at who is returning to the IU football program for the next season is an instructive process to help build appropriate expectations and identity potential strengths and weaknesses. This year, at least right now anyway, that process would be a fool’s errand. Back in August the NCAA passed a blanket eligibility waiver for all fall athletes. Under that directive, all fall sport student-athletes will receive both an additional year of eligibility and an additional year in which to complete it. But that doesn’t mean each player…
IU basketball in-state class of 2022 recruiting targets Jalen Washington (Gary West) and C.J. Gunn (Lawrence North) went head-to-head last week in Indianapolis. Gunn and Lawrence North won a thriller, 61-60. Gunn is No. 4 in white, Washington No. 13 in navy blue. Some other notable Division One talents on the court included Butler signee D.J. Hughes (5) and Shamar Avance (10) for Lawrence North along with IU quarterback signee Donavan McCulley (14). Quimari Peterson (1) and Mason Nicholson (50) are also high-level talents for Gary West. The emerging Avance stole the show with 28 points. https://youtu.be/6h5cjimMCwo Video credit -…
Indiana knew what was coming on Saturday. But preparing for it, and facing the real thing are two entirely different beasts. It turns out scout team up-tempo offense in frigid Bloomington was no match for Lane Kiffin’s torrid-paced offensive attack in hot and humid Tampa. Just how fast was the Ole Miss offense going at the Outback Bowl? Their seven-play, 57-yard drive to open the game took just 2:04 off the clock. And their decisive six-play, 63-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter chewed up just 1:46. Everything in between followed the same exhausting script. Indiana (6-2) forced 20 takeaways…

Trailing 20-6 in the third quarter in Tampa, Indiana looked like a lost cause at the Outback Bowl. But after a sluggish start the Hoosiers found answers late to tie the game at 20 with 5:40 remaining. After scoring just six points through their first eight drives, IU put together consecutive 80-yard touchdown drives to momentarily catch Mississippi. The fact-paced Ole Miss offense tormented IU for most of the day, and the Rebel attack had a quick answer, with a 6-play, 63 yard drive to reclaim a 26-20 lead after a missed extra point. The drive took just 1 minute…
Winning a bowl game has been a stated program goal of head coach Tom Allen since he took the job four years ago. Indiana has been routinely registering once-in-generation accomplishments for the last 15 months. Now the Hoosiers have their sights set on a something that has eluded them for 29 years. IU has been close, losing three bowl game appearances over the last five years by a total of six points. The next opportunity comes on Saturday in Tampa. It’s Indiana and Ole Miss at the 2020 Outback Bowl. THE OUTBACK BOWL: No. 7/8 INDIANA (6-1) vs. MISSISSIPPI (4-5)…
Is the Indiana program making a statement by excluding the Big Ten logo from its jerseys and helmets for the Outback Bowl? Head coach Tom Allen says no, but the league’s logos are in fact excluded. And Allen did not say that was done on accident. Soon after a viral Twitter post highlighted that IU removed the Big Ten logo from its jerseys and helmets, Allen released a statement. “To clarify what we are wearing on our uniform and helmet for tomorrow’s Outback Bowl: since I took over as Indiana head coach, this program’s mantra has been LEO, Love Each…
