The King’s reign came to an end on Tuesday morning in Tokyo. Former IU swimmer Lilly King finished third in the 100-meter breaststroke final at the Olympic Games. 17-year old fellow American Lydia Jacoby claimed the gold medal. King was 0.59 seconds off the pace at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker finished second. King came to Tokyo as the favorite. IU kept the 4-star train rolling in the class of 2022 on Monday, and new running backs coach Deland McCullough is once again at the center of the action. La Salle High School (Cincinnati, Ohio) 4-star running back Gi’Bran Payne announced he has verbally committed to Indiana. They’ve been paired up on the AAU circuit for multiple years, and the duo of Reed Sheppard and Gabe Cupps will visit IU in tandem on Aug. 2. Jody Demling of 247Sports reported on Monday that Sheppard and Cupps have a visit to Bloomington scheduled for next week. At least for Sheppard, IU is the first visit he has scheduled as on campus visits open back up. Indiana continues to see broad representation on college football award preseason watch lists, and in the case of Tiawan Mullen and Micah McFadden, that now includes appearances on multiple lists. The All-American defenders were named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list last week, and on Monday Mullen was named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, while McFadden was placed on the Butkus Award watch list. In 2020 Mullen became the first cornerback in program history to earn first-team All-America honors, while McFadden earned second team honors. It is one of the more historically successful teams at the Summer Olympics, and in 2021 half of the United States’ 4×100 men’s freestyle relay team has roots in Bloomington. On Sunday night in Tokyo, former IU swimmers Blake Pieroni and Zach Apple did their part and delivered the school’s 56th and 57th all-time gold medals. Overall, the United States men won in decisive fashion, delivering the fastest swim in the event in 13 years. Indiana released its 2021 football media guide and record book on Friday, and in it was the first depth chart for the 2021 campaign. While there weren’t many surprises in the first edition of the depth chart, it definitely comes with a couple caveats. First, several transfers arrived after spring practice, meaning the staff hasn’t had a look at them on the field. Indiana tight end Peyton Hendershot is the latest Hoosier to be recognized on a preseason watch list. The North Salem, Ind. product was named to the John Mackey Award preseason list. The John Mackey Award is given annually to college football’s most outstanding tight end.
