IU opened the Mike Woodson era with a 68-62 win over Eastern Michigan at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers were led by Trayce Jackson-Davis with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Xavier Johnson added 14 points and three assists.  Indiana led at one point 48-29 before EMU pulled to with 59-58 with 2:47 left.  The Hoosiers outscored the Eagles 9-4 to close it out. The first five isn’t always the end of game five, but for now Mike Woodson will go with the same five when his IU basketball coaching career debuts on Tuesday night. “Practice has been so competitive. But I’m going to stay with the same lineup we’ve taken into the Bahamas games,” Woodson said on Monday. The first thing that stood out about Tamar Bates when he walked into the room for IU basketball’s media day in late September was his physique. Once referred to as “light in the butt” by head coach Mike Woodson, Bates is now a solidly put together true freshman who has the basketball skills to go with the physical attributes.  He is also not light on confidence, and collectively all of that should propel Bates to a big role from the jump. “He’s a cocky kid that is not scared and I kind of like that in him,” Woodson said before…

“I feel very confident in stating that the goal is to win the Big Ten East and play here (Lucas Oil Stadium) on December 4th,” Tom Allen said in July at the Big Ten’s media day.
