The in-state class of 2023 isn’t loaded with high major talent, but one player in the incoming junior class who has been on Indiana’s radar for a long time is eyeing a June visit to Bloomington. Crispus Attucks (Indianapolis, Ind.) 2023 forward Jalen Hooks told The Daily Hoosier on Friday that his family is looking for a date to visit the IU coaches and campus next month. “We don’t have a set date yet but we have talked and said that one of these days at the end of June, we’re just trying to figure out which day,” Hooks told…
The state of Kentucky is unusually loaded with high major talent in the class of 2023, and Indiana is involved with all of the top players. The latest name to emerge is 6-foot-11 center Cyr Malonga. Malonga originally hails from Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo and now lives in Louisville and attends Evangel Christian. Kentucky Prep Report reported this week Malonga was planning to visit Indiana. The Daily Hoosier confirmed on Thursday with Brandon Bender, the athletic director at Evangel, that Malonga will indeed visit IU in early June. Malonga has a story similar to 2022 target Favour Aire. …
The list of players Indiana is pursuing in the class of 2023 is growing, and one of the latest is a rising post player from western Ohio. Replenishing the frontcourt is likely to be a priority in the 2023 class, and Austin Parks is someone who has caught Indiana’s eye after a strong start to travel basketball. The wide-bodied 6-foot-10 and 240 pound Parks attends St. Marys Memorial in Auglaize County near Lima. Parks told Steve Helwagen of the 247Sports Ohio State site that Indiana has been in touch regularly and he hopes to get to Bloomington for a visit…
(Via release from IU Athletics) Indiana men’s soccer sophomore forward Victor Bezerra finished as a runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious award in NCAA College Soccer, on Thursday night. The honor is given to the most outstanding men’s player in NCAA Division I soccer at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Bezerra, along with Valentin Noel (Pittsburgh), earned runner-up honors to the winner, Gloire Amanda (Oregon State). Bezerra gave Indiana three MAC Hermann Trophy finalists in the last four seasons, joining Andrew Gutman (winner) in 2018 and Grant Lillard (runner-up) in 2017. The MAC has honored…
For a 7-foot, 250 pound center, Michael Durr’s 2020-21 offensive efficiency numbers are a bit concerning, at least upon a quick glance. How can someone with that size only make 41 percent of his shots from the field? In fact, the new IU junior center has seen his field goal percentage drop each season, from 51 percent as a freshman, 49 percent as a sophomore, to that eye-catching 41 percent in his final season at South Florida. The fairly straightforward reason behind Durr’s decline in efficiency is that his field goal attempts have been increasingly occurring farther away from the…

The Big Ten Network released a highlight reel of IU football’s top-50 passing plays for the memorable 2020 season. Michael Penix, Jr. is of course featured prominently. He started all six games in which he appeared before he suffered a season-ending ACL injury. He completed 124-of-220 (56.4 percent) for 1,645 yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. Penix averaged a Big Ten-leading 274.2 yards per game (18th nationally). His three 300-yard games shared third on IU’s single-season list. One of Penix’s favorite targets was Ty Fryfogle, who became the first Hoosier to be named the Big Ten Richter-Howard Receiver of…
Indiana baseball coach Jeff Mercer couldn’t hide his frustration after learning that IU wasn’t going to allow fans for a four-game May homestand during a critical stretch of the 2021 season. Even after Monroe County had ended its local COVID-19 restrictions effective May 17, the school held firm on not allowing fans at its sporting events. “It’s incredibly frustrating,” Mercer said. “Incredibly frustrating. … It’s frustrating that we’re not allowing fans beyond family at this point.” Mercer’s squad would go on to lose three of the four games played at Bart Kaufman Field. Already we have seen significant crowds, in…
