The Daily Hoosier is previewing each position group during the final days leading up to the opening kickoff of the 2022 Indiana football season on Sept. 2 against Illinois (schedule here). Today we take a look at the cornerbacks. THE ROSTER THE SURE THINGS There aren’t many bold proclamations that can be made about this team, but few teams in the country can put as much talent and experience on the edge as Indiana. Seniors Tiawan Mullen and Jaylin Williams are locks to start. Mullen is coming off an injury-riddled 2021 season, but Indiana fans know what the former first…

You didn’t think we could complete the series without a look at Indiana did you? Last but not least are the Hoosiers, a team many are calling the Big Ten favorite in 2023. Head coach Mike Woodson accomplished the main goal most IU fans had for his first season — getting back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016. Indiana went 21-14 in Woodson’s first season at the college level after he spent 25 years as an NBA assistant and head coach. The 21 wins were also the most by the program since 2016. Despite the NCAA…
Over the next two weeks leading up to the Sept. 2 opener against Illinois, The Daily Hoosier will take a look at some new players on the 2022 football roster who should see substantial roles, along with returning players who are expected to play or produce at a much higher rate. The competition for playing time at receiver has been wide open at fall camp following the departure of starters Ty Fryfogle and Miles Marshall. Cam Camper is an easy name to remember, and it’s a name you hear daily at and around IU football’s fall camp. The 6-foot-2 JUCO…
Kentucky High School Athletics Association officials couldn’t get out of their own way to support the state’s flood relief efforts. An impressive list of the region’s top high school talent had assembled to play in the Midwest Charity Classic on Aug. 27 in Lexington, including IU commit Gabe Cupps and several Indiana recruiting targets. The event was to be a nationally televised game hosted by ESPN college basketball analyst Seth Greenberg at Frederick Douglass High School. Funds raised from the event were to go toward Kentucky flood-relief efforts. A historic and deadly flooding event in the eastern part of the…
Maintaining success has never been more difficult in college basketball. The combination of the transfer portal and the NBA Draft makes each offseason both eventful and potentially transformative for most programs. Now that the smoke has mostly cleared following the 2021-22 season, we’ll go team-by-team in the Big Ten to assess which programs are set up for success, and who might take a step back. ———— Next up is Wisconsin. The Badgers did in 2021-22 what they seemingly always do — win. Wisconsin posted its 23rd season with a .500 or better record in the Big Ten over the last…
After earning honorable mention All-Big honors as a 17-year-old freshman at Indiana, the odds seemed good he would follow in the footsteps of his older brothers and reach the NFL. But after a turbulent six-year college career that included two season-ending injuries, things weren’t so clear. His name wasn’t announced during the 2022 NFL draft, but still, Marcelino McCrary-Ball’s phone, and opportunity, rang on the third day of the draft. He was on the beach with his brother’s family when he got a call from San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch. There are few guarantees in the NFL, but…
With Indiana’s offseason roster changes behind us, we bring back our annual tradition of taking a closer look at the players expected to return to the program. Next up is power forward Race Thompson, who is training for his fifth year playing with Indiana, and sixth overall including a redshirt 2017-18 season. THE 2021-22 NUMBERS The 6-foot-8 Thompson started all 35 games in Mike Woodson’s first year as head coach. He was third on the team averaging 11.1 points, second in rebounding with 7.5 per contest (7.9 in league games), and second in field goal percentage (53.6 percent). A stat-sheet…
The first two days of the week brought bad news for two former IU football stars. On Tuesday, the Denver Broncos waived their 2021 fifth-round draft choice Jamar Johnson. Johnson had just played in the team’s Saturday preseason opener, and he led the Broncos with seven tackles. In 2021 Johnson made the Denver 53-man roster as a rookie despite dealing with an illness and an injury. He played only three games on special teams, and ended up with no stats. Johnson finished tied with Jaylin Williams atop the 2020 IU team with four interceptions. Johnson, who returned those picks 94…
