March 28, 1987 — New Orleans, Louisiana The largest crowd ever for a college basketball game saw a classic.  And they also saw something that many did not expect. The theme of veteran leaders in the defensive backfield carries over from the cornerbacks to the safety and husky positions in 2022. A pair of fifth-year safeties likely sit atop the depth chart in Bryant Fitzgerald and Devon Matthews.  Fitzgerald spent much of the 2021 season at the hybrid safety-linebacker husky position, but he is back working as a free safety this spring. Noah Pierre, another fifth year player who has manned every position in the defensive backfield including most recently cornerback in 2021, is back at the husky spot.
