Indiana will be more shorthanded than expected at guard in Columbus on Monday night. In addition to guard Rob Phinisee being out with an injury, Trey Galloway (lower body injury) and Khristian Lander (reaggravation of sore leg) will be unavailable tonight against Ohio State according to an IU release.  Galloway could be seen walking without a limp or any kind of boot in the pre-game. Head coach Mike Woodson hinted Indiana might be without Lander during a Saturday media availability, and the Hoosiers have been without Phinisee since January. The news about Galloway is new, however.  The 6-foot-5 sophomore missed…

Selection Sunday is just under three weeks away, and with IU basketball in the mix The Daily Hoosier will check in each week to see where they stand in the eyes of the bracketologists. Our favorite resource for bracket predictions is bracketmatrix.com, an aggregation site that compiles dozens of prognostications and produces an average. As it stands on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Bracket Matrix, Indiana is in the field as a No. 11 seed.  While a couple days old, this still directionally reflects where IU stands since they didn’t play over the weekend.  That reflects a one seed drop after a…

Coaching transitions can often lead to depleted rosters, but in large part due to his own salvage efforts, Mike Woodson was dealt a pretty good first year hand at Indiana.  On paper most believed coming into the season IU had an NCAA Tournament caliber roster at the least. Woodson has also been for the most part fortunate from an injury standpoint.  Yes, Trey Galloway and Rob Phinisee have both missed significant time, and they are key pieces to the puzzle, but this 2021-22 Indiana team has not seen the wave of injuries that has ravaged other recent IU teams. But…

Emotion has never been in short supply when it comes to Indiana guard Ali Patberg. Typically, she is the emotional leader on the floor for IU, celebrating with, encouraging, and willing on her teammates. But the emotions were different on Saturday after a 96-91 loss to Iowa.  Patberg and three of her teammates were playing their final scheduled home game, and she was asked about going through senior day. This time the emotions were too much.  Patberg’s quivering voice struggled through a few words before one of those teammates recognized the need to step in. Sitting next to her was…

The final home game for four Indiana seniors didn’t go as planned. In a matchup of strengths, Iowa’s offense was too much for Indiana’s defense.  The Hawkeyes shot 56.7 percent from the field including 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from three and defeated IU 96-91 in Bloomington. Indiana trailed throughout, including by as much as 22 points early in the fourth quarter before making things interesting in the closing minutes. The Hoosiers were led by Aleksa Gulbe’s 22 points.  Grace Berger added 21 points, six rebounds and four assists.  Ali Patberg had 18 points and six rebounds.  Gulbe, Patberg, Nicole Cardano-Hillary and…

As the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1988 and an All American in 1989, Jay Edwards was always going to have a place in the lore of IU basketball history. But over a three week span in the winter of 1989, Edwards ascended to near God-like status. On Feb. 12, 1989, Edwards hit a 16-foot shot at the horn to take down Purdue 64-62.  Three weeks later Edwards hit another shot against Illinois that appeared to be a game-winner — until Nick Anderson stunned the Hoosiers at the other end of the floor. But sandwiched in between those…

It has become a late season tradition in recent years. As the Indiana basketball season turns sour, a small but nasty vocal minority of the IU fan base turns ugly on social media. “Fu$%ing horrendous coaching,” said one commenter on Twitter in response to the official IU men’s basketball Twitter account’s posting of the final score of the Wisconsin game on Tuesday evening. “Mike Woodson ain’t it,” said another. “Woody has been mostly trash this year,” said the next. Those were just the first three of a 181 comment toxic sludge cesspool thread no player, parent or coach should ever…
