The computers project an uphill battle for IU football. At the end of spring practice, Indiana is rated No. 75 nationally in ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings, which are based on a metric that “is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.” Based on ESPN’s metrics, the Hoosiers would lose to an average opponent by 2.9 points on a neutral field. For perspective, the No. 1 team in preseason FPI,…
When he took the job two years ago, it didn’t take Mike Woodson long to figure out his most dynamic player at Indiana would be Trayce Jackson-Davis. So from day one, Woodson fed Jackson-Davis, and then he fed him so more. And then Jackson-Davis improved significantly at reading and passing out of double-teams, so Woodson fed him even more. By and large, it worked. Jackson-Davis was a consensus First Team All-American, Indiana finished in second place in the Big Ten, and the Hoosiers made a second straight NCAA Tournament despite losing their starting point guard for the season in December.…
Indiana’s search for wing production continues. Harvard transfer combo forward Chris Ledlum announced on Wednesday evening he has committed to Tennessee. Ledlum was the portal prospect the Hoosiers seemed to have the best chance of landing after he visited just over a week ago. But Ledlum took a visit to Knoxville over the weekend and announced the Tennessee commitment just days later. So far IU has landed Oregon center Kel’el Ware and Ball State forward Payton Sparks. The Hoosiers still have three open scholarships on their 2023-24 roster. The Daily Hoosier –“Where Indiana fans assemble when they’re not at Assembly” Find…
The transfer portal is back open for college football, and Indiana has lost a prominent name. Cornerback Trevell Mullen, a former 4-star recruit and younger brother of 4-year starter Tiawan, is in the portal according to reports on Wednesday. He was ranked as the No. 177 prospect nationally and the No. 19 cornerback in his 2022 class by Rivals. Mullen did not see the field in his 2022 freshman season at IU. He posted a statement to his Twitter page. He’s now one of six cornerbacks gone from last year’s team, including starters Tiawan and Jaylin Williams, and reserves Chris…
Flory Bidunga didn’t grow up in Indiana, but he has embraced the game of basketball like a young man who has known the hoops hysteria his entire life. Although he came here from thousands of miles away, Bidunga approaches the game much like the stereotypical native Hoosier — with hard work. Oh, and a smile. Bidunga is always smiling on the court — and off. But what has him smiling the most these days it seems is when the countless hours of training he puts in away from the public eye delivers results on the hardwood. When he first arrived…
As we laid out on Monday, Indiana’s primary roster need going forward is production from the wing. One player with a proven track record to that end is Notre Dame transfer guard Cormac Ryan. Ryan started in all 32 of Notre Dame’s games this past season. He averaged 12.3 points per game on 40.9 shooting from the field overall including 34.4 percent from three. He added four rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game. The 6-foot-5 Ryan is a career 35.5 percent three-point shooter including 40.7 percent on 140 attempts a year ago. His efficiency dropped off year-over-year, perhaps…
The class of 2025 feels like a long way off in the transfer portal era. But Indiana has some priority prospects among those players about to finish their sophomore years, including the lone center they’ve offered to this point, Kentucky-based big man Malachi Moreno. Indiana is one of a group of regional high majors who Moreno is hearing from the most right now. “Indiana, Purdue, Cincinnati, Xavier, and Ohio State,” he told The Daily Hoosier were the schools most involved in his recruitment right now. He says he has also heard from West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Indiana offered Moreno…
Class of 2024 guard Travis Perry is coming off a thrilling junior season. The Eddyville, Ky. guard became his state’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing the 4,000 point mark in the process. And playing for his father at a tiny school of less than 300 students, Perry led Lyon County H.S. to the final eight of the single-class Kentucky high school state basketball tournament. Perry averaged 32.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.7 steals per game through the first 35 games of his junior season. And now he’s turned his attention back to AAU basketball, where he plays for the…
