The Hoosiers have a tough task on Saturday to slow down a hot Maryland backcourt.  And they’ll have to do it without one of their best on-ball defenders. Head coach Mike Woodson announced via Zoom Friday point guard Rob Phinisee will not play at Maryland due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Phinisee suffered the injury on Wednesday in the win over Penn State. He cut awkwardly and had to be carried off by teammates. Phinisee is listed as day-to-day according to his coach. It is a big blow for the Hoosiers, especially with the Maryland backcourt performing much…

The Hoosiers refused to fall into another early hole against Penn State on Wednesday. The Hoosiers stormed out of the gates and did so with a little extra juice after their blowout loss to Michigan on Sunday. And they did so with the same starting five that has been criticized for their energy level to start the past couple of games. Their statement was made as Trayce Jackson-Davis–15 points, four rebounds, six assists, and four blocks– went right after forward John Harrar for the right-handed finish seconds into the game. He followed it up with a block on Greg Lee…

The Hoosiers received a wake-up call after their brutal 80-62 loss to Michigan on Sunday. Seemingly still celebrating their victory over Purdue on Thursday and the heroic shot by Rob Phinisee, almost instantly IU faced a 13-point deficit against the Wolverines. “I thought we were flat. You would think after a big game against Purdue, in front of your fans, you would really come out. But we didn’t we were flat,” head coach Mike Woodson told Don Fischer on his radio show Monday. The Wolverines managed to convert on 6-of-9 of their three-point shots for 66.7 percent, and 14-of-27 for…

The Hoosiers preached about avoiding any big-game hangovers following the Purdue win. They also preached about protecting home court. Those messages fell flat on Sunday afternoon in a humbling 80-62 loss to Michigan. Following the wins over then-No. 12 Ohio State and Minnesota, the Hoosiers were riding high and felt they were starting to play some of their best basketball at the most important time. But a road trip to Iowa brought them back to earth. The performance on Sunday was in many respects a repeat of the game against Iowa, as the Wolverines took advantage and picked apart an…

Michael Durr scored just four points in the 68-65 win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Thursday but was undoubtedly an unsung hero of the game. After playing just 23 minutes in the previous five games, the seven-foot center logged a season-high 24 minutes. The Hoosiers needed him for all of those minutes as preseason All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis was standing idly by on the bench in foul trouble. Durr was assigned a daunting task but didn’t back down. He needed to contain not one, but two Top 25 Wooden Award forwards in Zach Edey and Trevion Williams. The senior helped hold…

From this day forward, Indiana’s 68-65 win over Purdue on Thursday will likely be referred to as “The Rob Phinisee game.” It seemed as if the Hoosiers’ hopes of breaking their nine-game losing streak to Purdue were dwindling away. The streak would have extended to ten. It would also have been the seventh straight loss of Phinisee’s career to the Boilermakers. As a Lafayette native, Phinisee simply refused to let that happen.  For him, it is personal. “Every time I go home, people always talk trash to me. I just finally needed to get one,” Phinisee said after emerging from…

Let’s just say it.  The Hoosiers have not beaten their bitter rivals in nearly six years. Indiana has a nine-game losing streak against Purdue, with their last win coming in February of 2016 in Bloomington.  That was two head coaches ago when a guy named Yogi was running the point for the Hoosiers. Overall IU has lost 12 of 13 to the Boilermakers dating back to 2014. Over that span, Purdue has continued to evolve into a strong program under Matt Painter. And this year’s squad might be his best.  According to Kenpom.com, the Boilermakers lead the nation in adjusted…

The Hoosiers finally managed to break their losing streak on the road. After four losses all away from home this season and eight straight dating back to the 2020-21 campaign, Indiana held off the Nebraska Cornhuskers 78-71 in Lincoln on Monday night. They did so without their preseason All-American for the final seven minutes of the game. The IU bench, after being called out by head coach Mike Woodson for their poor performance against Iowa, scored 21 combined points. With multiple starters in foul trouble, they provided crucial minutes and secured the victory. “Our bench is just as important as…

Following Indiana’s loss to Penn State earlier this month, the team was looking for someone to provide more offense. They found that in spark plug guard Trey Galloway. The sophomore provided much-needed energy, playmaking, and scoring in his first game back from a wrist injury. He managed to score eight points, grab three rebounds, and dish out four assists. His effort led to an upset over then-No. 12 Ohio State. Galloway followed it up with a six-point, three rebounds, and one assist outing against Minnesota. He has quickly been inserted into the Hoosiers closing lineup late in games. “I’m getting…

The Hoosiers still can not figure out the formula to win on the road. Tonight they were missing the key ingredients. They were outrebounded, could not convert on free throws, and threw the ball away too many times while being puzzled by Iowa’s zones and presses. All of it led to a second-half disaster and an 83-74 loss for their fourth straight on the road this season and eighth overall. The turnovers were the major problem. In the first half, Indiana managed to lead despite having nine turnovers. Then the Hawkeyes decided to speed up the game to force the…
