Senior point guard Rob Phinisee will miss his sixth consecutive game due to injury. The Lafayette, Ind. native suffered a plantar fascia injury in the Hoosiers 74-57 win over Penn State. Phinisee appeared to cut awkwardly and had to be helped off the court by his teammates. The hero of the Purdue game was wearing a walking boot and used a scooter to get around at first. But he ditched the boot before the Michigan State game. This will be the 17th missed game of his career, but he will miss more. “Well, he won’t be back anytime soon,” said…

Despite being up by five points with four minutes left, the Hoosiers failed to build on their late lead and put away the game. This led No. 15 Wisconsin to escape with the 74-69 win. Indiana was only able to score four points in the last four minutes of the game and allowed the Badgers to go on a 13-4 run. The Hoosiers’ inability to score in crunch time doomed them. Indiana missed nine out of their final ten shots down the stretch, and Wisconsin went on an 8-0 run over the last 1:40 of the game. Xavier Johnson missed…

The Hoosiers season seems to be on the ropes amid a three-game losing streak against some of the toughest teams in the Big Ten. Following losses to No. 12 Illinois, Northwestern–in which they were without five players — and No. 19 Michigan State, Indiana is nearing desperation mode. Before the Michigan State loss, Joe Lunardi of ESPN had the Hoosiers getting into the Tournament as a No. 9 seed. Now, they have a slim margin of error. They still have chances at resume-boosting wins against No. 5 Purdue and No. 18 Ohio State as well as an emerging Rutgers team.…

It takes a lot to wind up the mild-mannered Mike Woodson. However, the officiating on Saturday in East Lansing pushed him to a new tipping point in the Hoosiers 76-61 loss to Michigan State. The game included 45 fouls called, 55 foul shots that were handed out, and many tense moments. At multiple points, players on both teams had disputes. Scuffles ensued after many hard fouls between the two physical teams. “I just think that it was two teams playing extremely hard getting chippy,” said Trayce Jackson-Davis. “When someone hits us, we’re gonna hit them back because that’s how it…

It was all gas, no brakes, and barely any breaks, for the six scholarship players and one walk-on who played in Indiana’s 59-51 loss to Northwestern on Tuesday night. News broke before the game that Tamar Bates, Xavier Johnson, Khristian Lander, Michael Durr, and Parker Stewart would be held out of the game due to disciplinary reasons. Rob Phinisee also missed his third-straight game due to a plantar fasciitis related injury. As a result, all five starters tonight had to play 30-plus minutes to keep Indiana in the game. Head coach Mike Woodson only summoned two players from the bench.…

Miller Kopp has sat in the locker room 47 times prepping for game day at the Welsh Ryan Arena. He will repeat his pregame routine once again for the 48th time at the Wildcats’ home venue. However, it will be in the visitor’s locker room this time. And instead, of slipping on a White and Purple jersey, he will be donning a cream and crimson jersey for the Hoosiers. Unable to fully express the feeling of the reunion, the senior forward landed on one word. “It is something that’s just gonna be weird I think,” reflected Kopp. “I spent three…

The strength of the Hoosiers became their Achilles heel in the 74-57 loss to No. 18 Illinois on Saturday. Despite dealing with a mammoth-sized center in Kofi Cockburn clogging up the paint, the Indiana offense attempted to start the game by going inside. The first play was designed to get Trayce Jackson-Davis an early look against Cockburn. Seemingly bothered by Cockburn’s size and athleticism, he rushed the shot and threw a hard brick off the backboard. Then IU went to Race Thompson, who would have his first shot attempt blocked. That set the tone for the day. “I mean, you…

Big man, big problem. Seven-foot, 285-pound Kofi Cockburn will be the main focus of the Hoosiers defense when No. 18 Illinois comes to Assembly Hall on Saturday (Noon Eastern, ESPN). The Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year is averaging 22.1 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, both career-highs. On Wednesday, Cockburn toasted No. 11 Wisconsin for 37 points and 12 rebounds. “They milked him until they couldn’t milk him no more, in terms of throwing it into him and him dominating the inside game. I mean, that’s where their strengths are.” said head coach Mike Woodson on Friday of Illinois…

The Hoosiers went from being outscored 8-0 in the opening two minutes to outscoring Maryland 68-47 the rest of the game in crucial win over the Terrapins on Saturday. The starters– who have been questioned for their unsteady starts to halves– found themselves in yet another hole at the XFINITY Center.  But Mike Woodson did not need the bench to save them from trouble this time. Instead, IU’s first five answered with a 10-0 run before anyone checked in off the bench. Race Thompson started the scoring for IU on his way to an 18-point, 12-rebound performance. It was the…
