By Dustin Dopirak Before he addressed anything volleyball related in his media day Zoom press conference Friday, Indiana coach Steve Aird began by wishing happy birthday to his wife Brandy and thanking her for all the work she has done home schooling their kids with the COVID-19 pandemic making in-person instruction difficult. He followed that by thanking the frontline workers dealing with the virus directly and said he and other members of the team took coffee and donuts to the people who conduct their COVID-19 tests every day at Assembly Hall. “For all the frontline workers, healthcare workers out there,…

Tom Allen said earlier this week that he will spend much of the offseason reconsidering Indiana’s running game after the Hoosiers finished 12th in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game. However, that project will happen without Indiana’s running backs coach and its starting running back for the last three seasons. Days after Michigan announced that Indiana running backs coach Mike Hart was returning to his alma mater to coach on Jim Harbaugh’s staff, junior Stevie Scott announced on his Twitter account on Friday that he will not return to IU for the 2021 season and instead enter the…

By Dustin Dopirak Purdue bounced off the Assembly Hall floor like it owned the joint, which made sense because at this point the Boilermakers pretty much do. Trevion Williams skipped toward mid court redshirt freshman forward Mason Gillis grabbed the game-ending rebound to polish off the Boilermakers’ 81-69 win over Indiana on Thursday night, then untucked his jersey from his trunks and slapped five around half court with redshirt freshman Brandon Newman. Purdue coach Matt Painter asked them to settle down the celebration just a bit, and the Boilers did, but they bounded to their locker room hollering with glee.…

By Dustin Dopirak Teri Moren was there for Purdue’s rise. As a freshman point guard under then coach Lin Dunn, she played for the first Purdue team to ever win more than 20 games in 1988-89. The next season, she was on the first Boilermaker squad to reach the NCAA Tournament and played in the tournament each of the next three seasons, reaching the Sweet 16 as a junior and winning a Big Ten title as a senior. The Boilermakers would go on to reach the tournament in 19 of the next 20 seasons, winning a national title in 1999,…

The eerie atmosphere of an empty Assembly Hall on game day is a phenomenon Indiana has simply had no choice but to get used to. In the time of COVID-19, the privilege of playing sports at all comes with playing without a crowd with regular season conference contests taking on the same feel of secret preseason scrimmages that only become known to the public through leaked box scores. Indiana has had 13 games to accept this new reality, and the Hoosiers mostly have. But it will be noticeable on Thursday at 7 p.m. when in-state rival Purdue comes to Bloomington…

Michigan announced Wednesday that Hart will be joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff as running backs coach after four years on the Indiana staff. A two-time Doak Walker Award finalist and four-year starter, he set school records in carries (1,015) and rushing yards (5,040) and ranks third in school history with 41 touchdowns. “Michigan has always held a special place in my heart,” Hart said in a…

Indiana sophomore guard Armaan Franklin’s status will be a game-time decision for Thursday’s 7 p.m. home game against Purdue, IU coach Archie Miller said in a Zoom press conference with reporters Wednesday afternoon. Franklin has missed the past two games since spraining his left ankle in the first half of the Hoosiers’ win over Maryland on Jan. 4. “Armaan is not 100 percent, clearly,” Miller said. “He’s missed basically three games if you take him out of the Maryland game. He’s continuing to do as much as he possibly can. He’s about nine days out from a sprain. It’s a…

By Dustin Dopirak Tom Allen had a chance to reflect Tuesday with the 2020 season over and the awards still rolling in. The announcement that he had been named AFCA Coach of the Year gave him the opportunity to consider his personal journey, the journey of the program that promoted him to head coach in 2016 and the journey of the team that hung in there through a season that was canceled for a period and complicated by COVID-19 protocols. But he also recognized that 2020 was not an end point but a next step and that there will not…
