BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Few Hoosiers entered the 2026 season with higher expectations than Nick Marsh.
No, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver was not a part of last year’s national championship squad. He played his first two collegiate seasons four-and-a-half hours north at Michigan State.
However, upon transferring to Indiana last winter, Marsh was immediately tasked with filling a massive hole in the receiver room. With the departures of Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. to the NFL, the Detroit native was expected to step in and produce right away.
After a seven-catch, 81-yard performance in Saturday’s 38-0 victory over Western Kentucky, the former Spartan has proven that he belongs in No. 4 Indiana’s explosive offense.
“I think he (Marsh) played really well…had a couple of key blocks,” head coach Curt Cignetti said postgame. “I think he’s coming. I really do.”
Marsh’s blocking may have gone unnoticed by casual fans, but not Indiana’s head coach.
Though he had a touchdown reception in each of the first two games, Marsh also totaled just four catches across the North Texas and Howard victories. On Saturday, he racked up seven receptions, nearly tripling his season total to 11.
Though he didn’t have a signature moment in Week 3, Marsh’s complete performance in all aspects of the position displayed what he is capable of as a starting wide receiver in Cignetti’s offense.
“Nick is a guy that is getting more comfortable each and every week. I think he’s going to have a big impact,” quarterback Josh Hoover added postgame. “I love the way that he works.”
Hoover, like Marsh, transferred to Indiana during the winter. It is clear that their chemistry is growing every week, as evident by Marsh’s larger target share in Saturday’s victory.
Under Cignetti, Indiana’s offense has never been complacent with where they are, and they are always looking for areas to improve. Marsh’s hard work and drive for perfection has already won over the wide receiver room.
“He (Marsh) always wants to improve in his game…“We talk to each other during practices…saying what kind of look did you get…and how did you run your route based on that,” wide receiver Charlie Becker said postgame. “I love having him on my side.”
Becker and Marsh have formed a fantastic one-two punch for Hoover. They complement each other very well, and their consistent production is a massive key to the Hoosiers’ offensive success this season.
Through the first three games of the season, Marsh has shown that he is ready to carve out a legacy of his own in Bloomington, in addition to filling in massive shoes.
No. 4 Indiana returns home Friday, Sept. 25 for its Big Ten opener vs. Northwestern, as the Hoosiers will look to improve to 4-0. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern on FOX.
