Ahead of its trip to Peru, Indiana’s FISU America Games exhibition game vs. Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf is Wednesday evening.
Here are some quick thoughts on the first public look at head coach Darian DeVries’ second IU basketball team.
WHAT TO KNOW:
- Opponent: Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, a secondary school based out of Montreal, Quebec
- Tip-off: Wednesday, 7 p.m. ET (Doors open at 5:30 p.m. ET)
- Where: Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, Bloomington, Indiana
- Television/streaming: None
- Radio: None
- Parking: Free
- Tickets: IU Athletics Link
- Rules: FIBA
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
Starting Five: Markus Burton, Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu are all near certain to start. How the remaining spots are allocated to two of Darren Harris, Jaeden Mustaf and Bryce Lindsay will be interesting to note. The team has been practicing for six weeks and there has been good competition for those roles.
The Rotation: This will be our first chance to see who has earned the most significant minutes coming off the bench. Clearly one will be the odd man out among the six mentioned above. Also, Trent Sisley and Prince-Alexander Moody are two younger players who appear to have a good chance to see meaningful roles. Of course in an exhibition setting, DeVries could very well utilize a deeper bench than normal.
Playing Style: When Indiana goes with Sherrell and Yigitoglu together, the Hoosiers will look much different than DeVries’ first IU team. How will he play with the 6-foot-11 and 7-foot-2 duo on the floor together? Will the Hoosiers be able to maintain good spacing? Will they be effective on the perimeter defensively?
Burton the Facilitator? Burton has been a scoring point guard throughout his career, but DeVries’ offense places a lot of emphasis on moving and sharing the basketball. This game will be the first indication whether Burton point production might drop vs. career averages, while his assist numbers rise.
Peru Prep? DeVries won’t have Yigitoglu available when the team plays in Lima, Peru next week. We’ll get a look at who mans the four spot when IU goes with just Sherrell on the floor. Presumably we’ll see plenty of action without Yigitoglu in preparation for the FISU games.
