Before he came to IU, Bob Knight became a well known coach at Army in the late 60s.

Knight never scheduled the Black Knights during his 29-year run as the Indiana head coach, but his former player Mike Woodson has Army on the Indiana schedule for the first time in program history.

According to a report by Jon Rothstein, Indiana will host Army on Nov. 12.  That news means 30 of the Hoosiers’ 31 opponents for the 2023-24 season are now known.

Army finished 17-16 a year ago while playing in the Patriot League.  They were ranked No. 248 at the end of the season according to KenPom.  The 17 wins were the most achieved by Army since 2016.

In March Army hired Kevin Kuwik as their new head coach.  He was an assistant under Archie Miller at Dayton, and also served under Brad Stevens at Butler, and did multiple stints under Thad Matta at both Ohio State and Butler.

In 1965, Knight was named the head coach of the Army men’s basketball program, where he would go on to post a record of 102-50 in six seasons.

Knight’s coaching appointment to West Point made him the youngest varsity coach in college history at age 24. He guided the Black Knights to four trips to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) (1966, 1968, 1969, 1970) and helped Army to one third-place and two fourth-place showings at the NIT. Knight coached Army to a pair of 20-win seasons, including an Academy-record 22 wins in 1969-70. He also remains one of just two Army basketball coaches to have registered more than 100 wins.

Another legendary IU coach, Branch McCracken, temporarily left his post at Indiana and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1944-46.
