Indiana moved to 4-0 with a 29-23 win over Northwestern on Friday in Bloomington.
The full offensive snap counts from the game are below.
But first, here are some notes on the offense coming out of the contest:
Quarterback
Josh Hoover is up to 11 touchdowns on the season with no interceptions. He had a season high 32 drop backs on the night. As has been the case in multiple games, Hoover went through a stretch of inaccuracy but was able to steady himself.
He opened the game 4-of-9 passing but then completed 15-of-20 the rest of the way. During the rough early stretch, he missed both Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh on multiple throws that would have gone for big plays including at least three touchdowns.
Hoover read a nickel blitz and ran for a first down. But PFF gave one of Northwestern’s sacks to Hoover because he held the ball.
Running back
On just nine carries, Turbo Richard forced seven missed tackles and had 70 yards after contact. He had the top PFF rushing grade on the team and the top overall offensive grade — but left the game with an injury.
Lee Beebe, Jr. was right behind Richard in terms of PFF grade, and he added five missed tackles forced and 94 yards after contact.
Despite starting the season with a running back trio, the staff didn’t turn to a rotation after Richard was injured. It was all Beebe.
Both backs had solid pass blocking grades.
Wide Receiver
Three wide receivers had the best PFF run blocking grades on the team — Shazz Preston, Nick Marsh and Charlie Becker — with Preston coming in at the top. The trio helped turn several good runs into big gains.
Preston had the best receiving grade after pulling in both of his targets. Becker was targeted a team-high 11 times. Marsh led the way with two contested catches.
Sure Northwestern tackling limited yards after catch for IU. Becker led all receivers with 16.
Tyler Morris appears to be ceding snaps to Davion Chandler at the slot. There is a split going on there at the least, and Chandler at times appears to be able to gain more separation and has more burst after the catch.
As has been the case all year, IU had no drops on the night.
Tight End
Andrew Barker appears to have separated in terms of total tight end snaps. And Trevor Gibbs has passed Brock Schott, who had a minimal role in the game.
Barker caught the first pass of his career. It was just the second completion to a tight end this year.
Consistent with postgame criticism by head coach Curt Cignetti, none of the tight ends were give strong marks by PFF.
Offensive Line
Among the offensive linemen, Carter Smith had the best run blocking grade and Drew Evans had the best pass blocking mark. All of the offensive linemen posted strong pass blocking grades except one.
During his postgame press conference, Cignetti said he needed the play at right tackle to improve. Adedamola Ajani gave up the only two pressures IU allowed on the night — and he allowed a sack. Hoover took big hits from Ajani’s man.
The offensive line was called for four penalties, including multiple related to the snap by center Bray Lynch.
