IU football: Who is coming and going in 2023 — Quarterbacks

During his senior night speech, Trayce Jackson-Davis turned to Tayven Jackson and said, “Tay-Tay, it’s your time to shine here.”

That time has begun with IU football’s spring camp.

Jackson, the IU basketball star’s younger brother, enters Bloomington after transferring in from Tennessee and joins a quarterback room with question marks.

The Hoosiers do not have much experience at the position for spring ball. After Connor Bazelak and Jack Tuttle transferred, only Dexter Williams II returns with any meaningful playing experience. And he won’t play this spring, as he continues recovering from his knee injury suffered in the season finale against Purdue.

So Jackson will get plenty of opportunities to showcase his abilities. The redshirt freshman appeared in three games last season with the Volunteers, all at the end of blowout wins. He totaled 37 passing yards on a 3-for-4 line, along with 10 rushing yards on four attempts with a touchdown.

Brendan Sorsby is IU’s lone returning quarterback who will throw this spring. The redshirt freshman entered one game last season, in a difficult position against Penn State, and he struggled. He went 3 for 6 for eight yards with an interception, and lost eight rushing yards on two attempts (because of a sack).

And true freshman Broc Lowry enters the picture as well. The three-star recruit was ranked the No. 25 pocket passer in the country by ESPN, and he was the top quarterback in Ohio in the class of 2023. Lowry led Canfield (Ohio) high school to a state championship as a senior.

IU is hoping Williams will be ready to return in time for fall camp, though he may not end up the starter even if he is. But no matter who Indiana goes with, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Walt Bell will have a player without a lot of in-game experience at the collegiate level.

Here is an overview of who has come and gone in the quarterback room. Stay tuned for more updates by position.

    QUARTERBACKS

Leaving: Jack Tuttle (transfer — Michigan), Connor Bazelak (transfer — Bowling Green), Grant Gremel (transfer — no destination yet)

Key Returning: Dexter Williams II (junior), Brendan Sorsby (redshirt freshman)

Incoming: Broc Lowry (3-star, Canfield, Ohio), Tayven Jackson (transfer — Tennessee)
