Three quick reasons why Indiana beat Michigan State
1. Indiana’s offense unstoppable. Indiana scored touchdowns on their first five drives of the game. They kicked a field goal on their seventh. The only thing that stopped IU from scoring on drive six was a decision to go for it on fourth down from the MSU 7. The Hoosiers moved the ball at will, amassing 464 yards in less than 29 minutes of possession. Fernando Mendoza was surgical through the air, completing 24 of 28 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns.
2. Second half defensive answers, once again. For the second weekend in a row, IU figured things out on defense during the second quarter and into halftime. The Hoosiers pitched a shutout after the break until a meaningless last minute field goal. MSU had 13 and 12 play scoring drives on their first two chances, but were held scoreless on their next five. Aidan Chiles did break loose for a 64-yard second half run, but the Hoosiers stuffed that drive as well. In the first half the Hoosiers struggled to get Chiles and the MSU offense off the field, in part because they were ineffective in generating a pass rush. Chiles was 27 of 33 for the game.
3. Unfazed by distractions, noise and clutter. Indiana was coming off a massive top-5 road win. They fell behind early against Michigan State. They struggled to stop Michigan State’s offense early. And there was a weather delay. The result? Dominance. IU has now outscored MSU 85-23 in the last two meetings, as they retain the Old Brass Spittoon for consecutive years for the first time since 1969.
