IU football game seven: Early odds, projections, details for homecoming against Michigan State

Travel weary Indiana is back in Bloomington and preparing to face Michigan State for homecoming.

The No. 3 Hoosiers (6-0, 3-0) will take on Michigan State (3-3, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington (Peacock).

Indiana is just 18-52-3 all-time against the Spartans.  The Hoosiers won the last meeting 47-10 in East Lansing a year ago, and they will attempt to retain the Old Brass Spittoon with consecutive wins over MSU for the first time since 1969.

Michigan State is led by second-year head coach Jonathan Smith.  He is just 8-10 overall and 3-9 in the Big Ten thus far.

The Spartans are averaging 29.5 points per game, good for 59th in the nation, and they are giving up 31.8 a contest, which comes in at just No. 121.

PFF grades Michigan State as having the No. 60 offense and No. 80 defense in the country.

MSU’s wins have come over Western Michigan, Boston College and Youngstown State.  They’ve lost three in a row, all in league play, at USC (45-31), at Nebraska (38-27) and vs. UCLA (38-13).

6-foot-3 junior quarterback Aiden Chiles is back at QB for the Spartans this season.  He has completed 61.3% of his throws for 1,019 yards with nine TDs and three INTs.

So what’s the outlook for this Saturday in Bloomington? Everything is pointing to the Hoosiers by a wide margin.

As of Monday morning, the gambling forecast is calling Indiana a 26.5 to 27.5 point favorite.

ESPN’s FPI model gives IU a 96.4% chance to win.  The Hoosiers are No. 2 in FPI while MSU is No. 73.  ESPN’s SP+ model projects a 40-14 IU win, and gives them a 95% probability to pull it out.

The early weather forecast for Saturday is calling for a high temperature of 80 with scattered thunderstorms. Obviously you’ll want to check back on that later in the week.

We will of course have much more on this game in the days to come.
