    IU basketball transfer portal names to know — Penn’s Jordan Dingle

    The transfer portal is still doing its thing here in late April, and one of the best guards in the country entered on Friday morning.

    Penn’s Jordan Dingle is in the portal according to multiple reports, and we expect IU to make a push.

    Dingle was the second leading scorer in the country this season and the Ivy League player of the year for 2022-23.

    Already, Indiana has reached out to Dingle, who is probably best thought of as a combo guard at the high major level.

    The 6-foot-3 Dingle is a big physical guard at 195 pounds.  He averaged 23.4 points on the 2022-23 season on 46.4 percent shooting from the field overall, including 55.5 percent from two and 35.6 percent from long range.  Dingle added 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 33.5 minutes per game.

    Dingle lives at the free throw line and converts at a high rate.  He took 167 free throws this past season and made 85.6 percent of them.

    From an advanced metric standpoint, Dingle stood out in several aspects.  He was fifth nationally in percentage of shots while on the floor, tenth in overall usage rate, 96th in fouls called against per-40 minutes, and 106th in fouls drawn per-40.

    There are obvious connections to Dingle that Indiana will have to overcome, including the fact that his father Dana played for now Kentucky head coach John Calipari at UMass.  Dana averaged 10.1 points per game for the Minutemen’s 1996 Final Four team.  He’s now a co-director of the New York Lightning on the Nike EYBL circuit.

    Dana and IU assistant coach Kenya Hunter’s playing careers overlapped, with both competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference from 1992 to 1996.

    Dingle also has his name in the NBA Draft, so he’ll have to decide to play another season of college basketball too.

    Dingle started his high school career at Lawrence Woodmere Academy (Woodmere, N.Y.), and played the last two years at Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.).  Dingle was not ranked coming out of high school, and Penn was his only known offer.
