IU basketball recruiting names to know: Class of 2024 in-state wing Kanon Catchings

One of the more intriguing prospects in the class of 2024 hails from the Indianapolis suburbs.

6-foot-7 small forward Kanon Catchings is a prospect full of potential and he has the attention of Indiana and other Midwest programs.

As a sophomore at Brownsburg H.S. (Brownsburg, Ind.), Catchings averaged 11.6 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range according to his MaxPreps profile.

The Daily Hoosier has had the chance to see Catchings in action multiple times, both with his high school team and this spring.  Running with the 2024 Indy Heat Nike EYBL squad, Catchings projects as a three at the next level.  He has a good-looking shooting stroke, great length, and he is a fluid athlete who runs the floor well.

Catchings seems like a player who, once he develops a bit more strength and a more aggressive on-court demeanor, will really take off.

His bloodlines suggest this is all just a matter of time.  His aunt Tamika is one of the best players in the history of the WNBA.  His mother Tauja played for Illinois, and his grandfather (Harvey Catchings) played in the NBA.

247Sports’ national analyst Eric Bossi expects Catchings to continue to ascend this spring and summer.  He talked about some Catchings’ other promising attributes on the court.

“He’s long and wiry, has good lateral quickness and is a bouncy vertical athlete who is armed with a dangerous jump shot,” Bossi wrote.

So far Indiana, Purdue and Illinois are the schools with reported interest in Catchings, who doesn’t appear in the early rankings for the 2024 class.

Given his combination of length, a highly-coveted skill set, and family background, don’t be surprised if Catchings really raises his profile over the next year.
