IU basketball recruiting: Class of 2023 names to know — point guard Jeremy Fears

If they don’t bring in a point guard in the class of 2022, that position will spring to the top of the priority list for Indiana after the upcoming season.

Indiana’s only class of 2023 offer thus far has been to a point guard, and that belongs to Lafayette, Ind. product Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn.  Quickly rising up the charts is another Midwest floor general — Illinois native Jeremy Fears.

247Sports national writer Travis Branham reported earlier this week that Indiana is “highly interested” in the rapidly emerging Fears.  The previous IU staff had some limited involvement, but now that has apparently ramped up considerably, with Dane Fife leading the the way for the Hoosiers.

Originally from Joliet, Ill., the 6-foot-1 Fears currently plays his high school basketball in Indiana at La Lumiere School in LaPorte.  He has said publicly that he made that move when it became apparent that high school basketball would be shut down in Illinois for the 2020-21 season.

As a freshman in 2019-20, Fears helped Joliet West finish with a 29-4 record after the team won just five games the previous year. He averaged 6.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, five assists and two steals per game for that campaign.  Coming out of his freshman year, Fears wasn’t known as a shot maker, but he has expanded his game to become a true point guard who has the ability to score at all three levels.  After watching him at last weekend’s Midwest Mania event in Westfield, Ind., it became apparent that Fears is a clear high major talent with elite quickness, speed, athleticism, and now that added ability to be a scoring point guard that makes him a complete prospect.

Fears is currently a 4-star recruit and ranked No. 23 nationally by 247Sports.  That service lists him as the No. 7 point guard in the class.  Thus far Fears has offers from more than a dozen programs including high majors Gonzaga, DePaul, Creighton, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.  Branham’s report indicates that Auburn, Michigan, Florida State and UCLA are some of the other program showing interest.

Fears’ father played college basketball.  Jeremy Fears Sr. spent time at Bradley before playing professionally overseas from 2008-2010.

Fears is No. 2 in the dark uniforms in the videos below.  His Nike EYBL AAU program Bradley Beal Elite went head to head a couple weeks ago against a Meanstreets program that includes IU targets Jalen Washington (13) and A.J. Casey (0).  It is worth noting that Fears is playing up a year with the Bradley Beal U17 squad.
